TAMIU Faculty Member Performs his ‘Rapsodia del Río Grande’ with UTSA Orchestra in San Antonio
A performance by the University of Texas – San Antonio (UTSA) Orchestra featured a Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) faculty member.
The concert, Rapsodia Mexicana, was Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the UTSA Recital Hall, and included performances by Dr. Colin Campbell, TAMIU associate professor of Music and interim chair of the TAMIU Department of Fine and Performing Arts. The evening also featured the UTSA Mariachi band Los Paisanos.
A special featured performance of Rapsodia del Río Gande, a musical composition by Campbell, was performed. Lauded as a powerful, haunting composition, the music inspired a Lone Star Chapter Regional Emmy Award-winning documentary film, “Rhapsody on the Rio Grande,” aired on KLRN and other PBS Channels. The film explores the impact of the river’s ability to bring together diverse peoples, using music to explore culture and history. It was debuted at TAMIU.
Musical selections celebrated Mexican composers while also heralding Texas’ Hispanic heritage, as they bring the spirit of the Hispanic culture to life.
Originally from South Africa, Campbell graduated from the University of Port Elizabeth with a Bachelor of Music in performing arts degree, followed by a Master of Music. He also obtained the Performers Licentiate Diploma in Organ from the University of South Africa with distinction.
He’s appeared with some of the most noted South African orchestras on both piano and organ and performed during live radio broadcasts and for youth concerto festivals. He has made several recordings for the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s National Radio Service. His recitals as a solo artist and in chamber ensembles throughout South Africa, Namibia, Europe, and the USA have earned critical acclaim.
