Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) IBC Bank and Commerce Bank 2025–2026 Keynote Speaker Series will feature Dr. Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera, professor in the Schar School of Policy and Government and co-director of the Terrorism, Transnational Crime and Corruption Center (TraCCC) at George Mason University, presenting her lecture “U.S.–México Border Security Risks Today: A ‘New Generation’ of Criminal Networks.”

The lecture is Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. in the TAMIU Student Center Ballroom (STC 203). Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Correa-Cabrera’s presentation will address general trends in organized crime in México and the main security risks at the U.S.–México borderlands today. She will also examine hemispheric-level risks and a new generation of criminal networks whose characteristics are driving militarization on both sides of the border.

An internationally recognized expert on border studies, U.S.–México relations, and illicit networks, Correa-Cabrera has authored several books, including "Los Zetas Inc.: Criminal Corporations, Energy, and Civil War in México" (2017; Spanish edition 2018), "Democracy in 'Two Méxicos': Political Institutions in Oaxaca and Nuevo León" (2013), and "Frontera: A Journey across the U.S.–México Border" (co-authored with Sergio Chapa, 2024).

Her recent Spanish-language books include "Las Cinco Vidas de Genaro García Luna" (The Five Lives of Genaro García Luna) and "La Guerra Improvisada: Los Años de Calderón y sus Consecuencias" (The Improvised War: Calderón’s Years and Consequences) (both co-authored with Tony Payan and published in 2021).

Correa-Cabrera is co-editor of International Studies Perspectives (Oxford University Press) and past president of the Association for Borderlands Studies. She has served as principal investigator for a U.S. Department of State-funded study on organized crime and trafficking in persons in Central America and México’s eastern migration routes.

A former Fulbright U.S. Scholar in México and visiting scholar at El Colegio de la Frontera Norte, she is currently a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding at Dartmouth College (Fall 2025).
