Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) has announced the launch of a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science in Fall 2026, a major expansion of the University’s engineering offerings at a time when the region’s economic and industrial influence continues to grow.

Designed and built on ABET-aligned standards, the new program provides rigorous foundation in programming, algorithms, systems, networking, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), and software engineering, while immersing students in emerging, high-impact areas shaping the future of the global economy.

Applications for the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree program will open in early 2026.

In addition to core computing preparation, students will receive comprehensive training in:

  • Cyber Forensics: engaging in digital evidence acquisition, mobile device forensics, memory and network forensics, and malware investigation.
  • Digital Logistics: applying AI, machine learning algorithms, and secure database systems to optimize supply chains and enable real-time operational insight and decisions. In 2024, Port Laredo handled about $339.7 billion in trade, ranking first among all U.S. ports of entry by trade value.
  • Autonomous Computing: designing, programming, and operating autonomous drones and ground vehicles, integrating sensor systems and embedded software, and developing Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) for enhanced safety and automation.

A state-of-the-art Cyber Forensics Laboratory will be established and housed within the School of Engineering, paving the way for students to gain hands-on experience with advanced tools, simulations, and investigative platforms used in cyber defense and security, law enforcement, and secure systems operations.

“This program reflects TAMIU’s commitment to meeting the region’s workforce and innovation needs,” said TAMIU President Dr. Christopher Maynard.

He continued, “Computer Science sits at the center of national security, logistics, healthcare, transportation, and nearly every modern industry. With this degree, we are preparing students not only to join those industries, but to transform them.”

Dr. Claudia San Miguel, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, emphasized the program’s alignment with regional, national, and global dynamics.

“Laredo plays a pivotal role in North American trade, and our students will be trained in the technologies driving that movement, cybersecurity, digital logistics, and intelligent autonomous systems. This program strengthens our academic mission and opens pathways to high-impact professions,” said San Miguel.

Graduates of the program will be prepared for high-demand careers such as Cyber Forensics Analyst, Smart Logistics Analyst, and Autonomous Systems Engineer. Students will also develop ethical and professional computing practices and gain preparation for advanced study, research, or industry certifications.

“Industry needs problem-solvers fluent in cybersecurity, logistics technologies, artificial intelligence, and automation,” said Dr. Marcus Ynalvez, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.

“This program positions students to meet those demands and prepares graduates to lead discovery and innovation in both industry and research,” Ynalvez noted.

Dr. Mahmoud Khasawneh, director of the School of Engineering, noted the School’s history of strong industry and graduate placements.

“Our programs have a strong track record of placing students in Fortune 500 companies, federal agencies, and top graduate schools. This new Computer Science program builds on that trajectory and strengthens the pipeline of talent entering high-demand fields and occupations across our region and beyond,” said Khasawneh.

The announcement comes during a period of rapid expansion for the School of Engineering. Since Fall 2021, engineering enrollment has increased by 65%, and by Fall 2026 the School’s faculty ranks will have grown by more than 100%.

In addition to this new bachelor’s degree, the University will launch a Master of Science in Systems Engineering in Fall 2026. A Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering has also received full approval and will launch following the completion of laboratory facilities and supporting infrastructure.

Registration for the Spring semester is now underway.  Classes begin Tuesday, January 20, 2026, with late registration ongoing through Monday, January 26.
