TAMIU Faculty, Students to Offer Free Health Screenings Oct. 21-22

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) students will have the opportunity to strengthen their professional skills while giving back to the community through a service-learning project offering free health screenings.
Faculty and students from TAMIU’s programs in kinesiology and communication sciences and disorders will provide the screenings Oct. 21–22 from 1–5 p.m. in the Clinical Health Sciences Center, room 120.
The screenings will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis and are open to University students, faculty, and staff, as well as members of the public.
Screenings include:
- Body composition assessment with InBody Scans to measure body fat content, abdominal visceral adiposity, muscle mass and water percentage
- Girth measurement for tissue distribution
- Forearm strength assessment for overall physical fitness
- Cardiovascular risk factor screening
- Vital signs screenings for blood pressure, heart rate and temperature
- Dietary education
- Voice evaluations
- Speech-Language screenings
The service-learning initiative brings students from Assistant Professor Dr. Jose Moris’ Exercise Prescription course, Clinical Assistant Professor Nidia García’s CSDO 4300 Multicultural-Linguistic Trends in Communication Disorders course and Clinical Assistant Professor Daniella García-Zertuche's Clinical Practice in Communication Disorders course, as well as relevant student organizations to gain hands-on experience while promoting health and wellness throughout the community, explained Cihtlalli G. Pérez, QEP director.
“This experiential learning opportunity allows students from different disciplines to apply classroom knowledge and specialized skills in an authentic community setting. By working alongside faculty and one another, students gain valuable professional experience while providing meaningful service to community members,” said Pérez.
