NURS 4363
Leadership, Management and Issues in Nursing
Three semester hours. (SP)
In this theoretical and experiential course, current theories of management and leadership are examined and related to nursing practice and focus is placed on prominent national, state and local issues in nursing and health care. Leadership is examined in both historical and evolving contexts as a process which can be learned, key practice, education, and government issues in nursing are examined. Elements that determine the culture of nursing and health care organizations are considered with regard for inherent issues concerning the development of nursing roles. Student will learn the effective use of power as a positive force in bringing about desired change, learn the rights and duties of providers and recipients of care, explore political and legal foundations of the health care profession, learn who controls health care resources, practice decision-making, and develop critical thinking to establish innovative and creative approaches to nursing practice through clinically related applications. To earn credit, this course must be completed with a grade of “C” or better. Prerequisite: Basic: NURS 3314, NURS 3315, NURS 3590, NURS 3665 or NLN Mobility Exam. Co-requisite: NURS 3302, NURS 3525.
