Music in Austria

Program

TAMIU’s Department of Fine and Performing Arts will offer a 4-week study abroad program in Salzburg, Austria.  This three credit program consists of a music course related to the most important compositions and lives of famous Austrian composers (Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven and Schubert). 

Students will experience music first hand in Austria at the Salzburger Festspiele and will visit Vienna as part of an overnight weekend stay.    This program is led by Dr. Gechter, who has extensive experience in Austria.  All on-site travel in Austria, housing and admission expenses are included in the program fees.

Itinerary

Week 1

Arrival in Salzburg, orientation and welcome dinner.  Tour of the city and visits to Mozart’s birthplace.  Mon – Fri class sessions in the morning with visits in the afternoon to Hohensalzburg Castle, St. Peter’s Monastery, The Sound of Music Tour.  On the weekend visits to the Salt Mines and Untersberg via cable car.

Week 2

Mon – Fri class sessions in the morning with visits in the afternoon to Salzburg Residenz, Mozart’s Residence.  On Friday departure to Vienna via train, for a guided tour of the city, and visits to various famous musician apartments, Central Cemetary, and free time in Vienna to visit Schonbrunn Castle and its beautiful park.  Return on Sunday via train to Salzburg.

Week 3

Mon – Fri class sessions in the morning with visits in the afternoon to Festival Hall, the Marionette Museum.  A free weekend for personal travel and activities.

Week 4

Mon – Fri class sessions in the morning with visits in the afternoon to Michael Haydn Musuem, the Stiegl Brewery, and Salzburg’s Zoo.  An Austrian farewell dinner concludes you program.

 

Accommodation

Students will be residing at the Franz von Sales Kolleg, a student residence conveniently located in the city.  Double apartments with 2 bedrooms (each room with one twin bed) for participants; each apartment has a private bathroom, kitchen and free internet access (wi-fi).  Laundry facilities are available to use at the student residence.  Your stay in Vienna will be in a youth hotel with double occupancy for students.

Program Cost

Program cost is $3,260, excluding the round trip airfare to Austria, meals, and TAMIU tuition/fees.  This is based on a minimum of 12 students enrolled.

4 March Application and $200 non-refundable application fee due to OIE
3 April Program Installment of $ 1,530
1 April Mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation
1 May Remaining program balance of $ 1,530 due
Applications will not be processed unless they are complete and received by the stated deadline. 

Application Process

1)  Turn in your study abroad application, and pay the application fee here (mastercard/visa only - visit with OIE if you prefer to make a payment by check or cash)

2)  Apply for any of the TAMIU study abroad scholarships for which you qualify.

3)  Print out a Financial Aid Budget Form for your personal use.  OIE will provide an update of your educational expenses directly to the Office of Financial Aid.

4)  Complete and turn in your Waiver and Liability Packet by 1 May 2011

Study Abroad Scholarships

TAMIU/OIE offers two scholarships for study abroad. Qualified TAMIU students may complete their application and supporting documents and submit them to OIE together with their study abroad application. You will be notified via email of your award and the award disbursement date.

Course Information

All students are required to enroll in the course listed below.  Non-music majors/minors may apply as well.

Program Requirements

Students must have been approved by Dr. Gechter for acceptance into the program.

Refunds**

Withdrawal from a study abroad program must be made in writing to OIE. The application fee of $200 is non-refundable, unless TAMIU cancels the program. The application fee will be applied to your total program cost. After this, TAMIU will refund recoverable tuition and costs as determined by OIE. Refunds will be calculated from the date OIE is notified in writing of your intent to withdraw. TAMIU is not responsible for indirect costs paid directly by students, including but not limited to passport fees, vaccinations, and transportation costs.
