Program Dates

May 15 - June 18, 2011.

Program

Join us now for a new and exciting program in Spain!  TAMIU’s College of Arts and Sciences will offer a five-week study abroad program based in the cities of Madrid and Seville, with extensive travel to the surrounding areas. In this program you will learn about the diverse aspects of Spain through the study of its history, specifically the Civil War (1936-39) and how Spain has been regarded by American and English writers from the 19th century to the present.

In the first two weeks, Madrid will serve as your home base.  Classes will be taught each morning (Mon-Thu), in combination with visits to a number of historical sites during a walking tour of Madrid, and visits to Palacio Real, Museo del Prado and Reina Sofia.  A long weekend trip to Segovia (with stops to El Escorial and Valle de los Caldos) and Burgos and Pamplona is also scheduled.  While in Madrid, students will be living in Residence Halls, and will have the opportunity to cook their own meals.

For the remaining three weeks Seville will serve as the home base.  Here classes will continue to be taught each morning (Mon-Thu).  Daytrips and overnight stays include Cordoba and Granada.  To give you a full immersion experience, you will be living with Spanish host families.  Three meals per day are included in this and provided by the family.

This program is directed by Dr. Cristina Garrigos, a native of Spain (Seville), and Associate Professor in the Department of Language and Literature.  Dr. Jerry Thompson will co-direct the program, and is a Regents Professor at the Department of Social Sciences.  Courses are available for either undergraduate or graduate credit.

Accommodation

Students will be living in residence halls (2 weeks w/double occupancy).  Meals are not included, but students have access to a furnished kitchen.  The last three weeks will be with host families, with three meals per day included in the program cost.

Program Cost

Program cost $3,860, excluding the round-trip airfare to Madrid, meals (first two weeks), TAMIU tuition and fees, and personal expenses.
