NURS 3405
Scholarly Inquiry and Evidence Based Practice
Four semester hours, theory only. (FL)
This course focuses on the introductory use of the research process in the development of nursing knowledge and practice. Current reference resources are identified and examines for their value in informing an evidence based nursing practice. Steps in the research process are detailed. Research questions are explored with regard to theoretical underpinnings, methods of data collection and analysis, and the interpretations and use of study findings to guide the care of individuals, families and communities. The roles and responsibilities of nurses as researchers and scholars are examined. The importance of scientific integrity and maintaining ethical standards in research is emphasized. Published research reports are critically analyzed to determine the applicability of findings to nursing practice. The Evidence Based Practice Hierarchy guides the categorization and evaluation of studies for translation to clinical practice. Gaps in the literature are identified as areas for further study.
