TAMIU, George Mason University, Sam Houston University Professors Release New Book on Terrorism Studies
Dr. Huseyin Cinoglu, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at Texas A&M International University, is a co-author of Typologies of Terrorist Organizations: Conceptual Lenses and Counterterrorism Measures (Carolina Academic Press, 2025), along with Dr. Mahmut Cengiz (George Mason University) and Dr. Mitchel P. Roth (Sam Houston State University). The book offers a straightforward way to compare terrorist organizations by looking at what they believe, how they are structured, and how they operate, with practical value for both classroom use and real-world analysis.
In five chapters, Dr. Cinoglu takes a closer look at how and why terrorist groups differ in meaningful ways. He examines Salafi-jihadist organizations like al-Qaeda and ISIS, religious nationalist movements such as the Taliban and Hamas, and Shia militancy with special attention to Iran’s influence. He also provides a comparative chapter on faith-based terrorism outside the Islamic context, including Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, and Jewish cases. Finally, he addresses state terrorism and explains what it looks like, why it matters, and how it can be understood alongside non-state violence.
