Development of Geography

What is Geography?

Geography concerns the relationship between place, the environment, and society. Situated at the intersection of environmental science and social science, it investigates the patterns and processes that produce the world’s physical and cultural landscapes. Geographers engage a range of disciplines and approaches guided by a spatial lens and a general “where?” question. Emerging from this line of investigation are themes such as geospatial technologies, cultural and political ecology, urban planning, land use and land cover change, and weather and climate change among others. In short, geography is the discipline that best addresses the most pressing challenges that citizens of our planet face like climate change, resources, environmental sustainability, and environmental justice.

Why Geography?

If you would like to enhance your undergraduate major with a focus on the environment or the spatial (where and why?), geography at TAMIU is an ideal choice for an academic minor. This program of study covers the breadth of the discipline with 14 course offerings that provide training in human geography, geospatial (GIS) techniques, and physical/environmental geography. Beyond the intrinsic value of students having a social and environmental perspective on the world, geographers have valuable and unique skillsets that open doors to careers and occupations. Numerous opportunities and high labor demands exist for geographers in commerce, industry, and government with physical geography, human geography, and geographic information science (GIS) training being sought. The American Association of Geographers (AAG), using US Department of Labor statistics points out that “There are hundreds of occupations that require knowledge of and skills in geography, and the diversity of career opportunities available to geography graduates continues to grow every year. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, median wages for geographers were $81,970 in 2019." (AAG, www.aag.org/jobs-careers external site icon).
