Jiyeon Hwang, a Korean lyric coloratura soprano, is celebrated for her bright, sweet timbre and impressive vocal range. She has captivated audiences through her performances in operatic roles, recitals, and concerts across the United States, Europe, and South Korea. Currently, Dr. Hwang is an Assistant Professor of Voice and Choir at Texas A&M International University, where she leads the voice and choir programs and teaches courses such as Applied Voice, Song Literature, Voice Methods, Opera Workshop, Choir, and Choral Literature & Teaching Technique.
Dr. Hwang earned her Bachelor’s degree in Voice from Chung-Ang University in South Korea, where she received a full scholarship after placing first in the entrance live audition. She completed her Master of Music in Voice Performance at the Manhattan School of Music and her Doctorate in Voice Performance at the University of Minnesota, where she was awarded the prestigious Harvey V. Berneking Opera Fellowship.
Specializing in Korean Art Music, Baroque repertoire, and Contemporary works, Dr. Hwang has performed leading operatic roles, including Adina (L’elisir d’amore), Adele (Die Fledermaus), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro), and Lakmé (Lakmé). Her notable accomplishments include performances in the innovative Webpera project—a virtual opera collaboration with Camerata New Jersey—and her portrayal of Berta in Cleveland Opera Theatre’s The Barber of Seville.
Her numerous accolades include the William Vernard Award from NATSAA, the Gold Award from the Forte International Vocal Competition, and first prize in the Kenwood Symphony Orchestra Competition. In 2022, Dr. Hwang made her debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall and has also performed at renowned venues such as Lake Harriet and Como Park with the Kenwood Symphony Orchestra.
In addition to her teaching and performance career, Dr. Hwang is deeply committed to student engagement and cultural exchange. She serves as the faculty advisor for the K-pop Organization at TAMIU and leads the university’s study abroad program in Korea, providing students with enriching global experiences and opportunities to immerse themselves in Korean culture and music.
At TAMIU, Dr. Hwang combines her performance expertise with a passion for teaching, inspiring students through her innovative approach to vocal and choral education. Her research focuses on vocal health, expressive artistry, and music’s transformative role in community outreach, including interdisciplinary collaborations in rehabilitation programs.
Dr. Hwang’s dedication to excellence in performance, pedagogy, and research continues to inspire students and audiences, solidifying her reputation as a distinguished artist and educator.
