Latin American Studies & Foreign Language Program

Mount Ida College

Through the Virtual Field School, Patricia González, TAMIU adjunct faculty member, and students from Mount Ida College at St. Newton, Massachussets, participated in a virtual and real exchange. Mt. Ida students, who were in Laredo to volunteer with the local Habitat for Humanity Youth Program, participated in a cultural activity headed by Professor González. A tour of Laredo, Texas gave Mount Ida students an overview of the South Texas/Mexican border region, covering social and cultural sites on both sides of the border.

The group included nine students and group organizers, Danielle Silva and Jared Clayton Brown, who toured this border city, learning about its rich heritage and economic distinction as the largest inland port at the U.S./Mexican border. Along with Professor González, the students experienced the streets of Laredo, border cuisine, and non-traditional architectural design. They also learned about traditional Mexican customs and the dialect of Spanish spoken in Laredo. Once home, students shared their photos and experiences with other Mount Ida College students.

This novel collaboration provides the professor with many new opportunities for future TAMIU students to become language and cultural ambassadors. As a result, in Fall 09, Puerto Rican students from another college will join TAMIU heritage language students in a virtual classroom.
