Services department is provid-
ing faculty with information
and training on how to create
accessible documents and course
content. It is the intent of the Of-
fice of Information Technology,
Instructional Technology and Dis-
tance Education Services to assist
faculty in the delivery of online
classes that are available follow-
ing a universal design structure
to meet the needs of all learners.
Our office has developed a train-
ing course entitled Accessibility
Matters. Accessibility Matters
training course is an overview
of the Americans with Disabili-
ties Act of 1990 (ADA), Section
504 and Section 508 of the
Rehabilitation Act of 1973, or
as amened. Section 508 of the
Rehabilitation Act specifically re-
quires federal agencies to make
their electronic and information
technology (EIT) accessible to
people with disabilities. To date,
100 percent of the Texas A&M
International University faculty
teaching online and hybrid cours-
es in Spring/Summer 2016 have
taken the A&M System Accessibil-
ity Matters Training.
Additionally, faculty have signed-
up and have taken over 20 hours
of accessibility how-to training.
Offerings include: Creating con-
tent for different learning styles,
Creating Accessible Content when
using Audio and Video, Creating
Accessible Content with Adobe
PDF, Creating Accessible Content
with MS Powerpoint and Creating
Accessible Content with MS Word.
Our office will include accessibili-
ty training with some BlackBoard
trainings, incorporate accessibil-
ity in Quality Matters (Standard
8) and utilize Atomic Learning
for specific accessibility trainings
like accessible syllabi and deliver
accessible content for all courses.
Texas A&M International
University prides itself on be-
ing proactive in its resolve to
encourage all of its faculty to
be self-sufficient and have the
know-how to create and main-
tain accessible course materials
for all students.
The eLearning department
of the Office of Information
Technology supports faculty
and staff by providing training
and captioning/transcription
services. Accessibility training
comes in many forms includ-
ing the accessibility Matters
course in TRAINTRAC, as well as
monthly accessibility trainings
offered through the OIT
Professional Development
web site. Trainings can also be
provided one-on-one, schedule
permitting. Caption / transcrip-
tion services are offered for
course introductions, lectures,
and videos. Please contact the
office of eLearning for require-
ments. And, the more lead time
the office gets, the better.
