The newest form of water fitness, Aqua Zumba®, is being offered at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU).  The next class is scheduled Mondays from 7:15-8:15 p.m., Aug. 22- Sept. 26 in the Residential Learning Community Pool on campus.

Class fee is $20 for TAMIU Rec Center members and $40 for non-members. The community is encouraged to join the class.

Denise Schuster, TAMIU associate director of fitness and wellness for Recreational Sports, said the class is both invigorating and fun.

“The Aqua Zumba® Program gives new meaning to the idea of an invigorating workout. This is not your normal aqua class. You will be moving to inspirational Zumba® music against the resistance of the water. The movements are challenging and you can really feel the muscles working against the resistance. Splashing, stretching, twisting, even shouting, laughing, hooting and hollering are often heard during the class,” Schuster explained.

She said there are clear advantages to water-based exercise.

“It’s a great workout without added stress on the joints because of the buoyancy of water.  There’s also reduced risk of injury, strong fat burning and endurance building as well as increased metabolism,” she added.

The class is held in a shallow four-foot pool so swimming skills are not necessary. It incorporates water aerobics and water weights for resistance. The course is lead by a certified Aqua Zumba® instructor Sandra Leal.

Interested persons can register at the TAMIU Rec Center front desk.
