Over 800 candidates for graduation from Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) will participate in next week’s Summer and Fall 2019 Commencement Exercises at the Sames Auto Arena (SAA) on Thursday, Dec. 12 at 4 p.m.

The Ceremony’s estimated duration is three hours. No tickets are required for entry. As no reserved seating is available, seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. The Ceremony will also be livestreamed at go.tamiu.edu/gradceremony.

Commencement Speaker for the Fall Exercises is State Senator Judith Zaffirini (D-Laredo).

Zaffirini represents the 21st Senatorial District, stretching from the Rio Grande to the Colorado River and to the Port of Corpus Christi and the Valley. Re-elected nine times, she is the first Hispanic woman elected to the Texas State Senate, the second highest-ranking senator, and the highest-ranking woman and Hispanic senator.

Like many South Texas success stories, Senator Zaffirini's began with education. Working long hours while achieving an exemplary academic record provided the path for her decades of accomplishments in the Texas Senate. She earned her B.S., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from The University of Texas at Austin.

TAMIU student respondent for the Ceremony is Nelly Salazar, representing University College and earning a Bachelor of Arts in Multidisciplinary Studies with concentrations in English, History and Philosophy. Salazar is the recipient of several University scholarships and a member of the University Honors Program, Phi Kappa Phi and Reading the Globe.

Additional Distinguished Student Scholars and their respective Colleges or Schools Genesis Vera, A. R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business; Lisseth Díaz, College of Arts and Sciences; Luz G. González, College of Education, and Aileen Karina Rendon, College of Nursing and Health Sciences.
