TAMIU Hosts Organ Improv of the Silent Horror Film ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ Saturday

The Phantom of the Opera

This year, why not start your Halloween festivities a little earlier than planned with an afternoon screening of the classic, silent film, “The Phantom of the Opera” Saturday, Oct. 30 at 3 p.m. at Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

Admission to the presentation is free and open to the public.

The silent film features a live, improvised accompaniment on the Sharkey Corrigan Pipe Organ by TAMIU associate professor of Music Dr. Colin Campbell.

“The Phantom of the Opera” (1925) is an American silent horror film adaptation of the Gaston Leroux novel directed by Rupert Julian.

The silent film featured the acting credits of the legendary Lon Chaney as the deformed Phantom haunting the Paris Opera House.

Throughout the film, the Phantom’s seemingly unending quest of murder and mayhem takes place to encourage the Opera’s House management to cast the woman he loves as the lead in an upcoming production.

A Halloween campus staple for members of the campus and community, past improvisation performances have included silent films like “Nosferatu,” “Faust,” “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari,” and “The Haunted Castle.”

While on campus, the use of face-coverings is highly recommended and social distancing will be observed.

For more information on the concert, contact the College of Arts and Sciences, department of Fine and Performing Arts at 956.326.2654, or visit offices in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts, room 217.
