For individuals with a passion for performance or those seeking an elective credit, Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) Dance program offers a bevy of courses this Fall.

Prospective students can choose from studio courses like Modern/Contemporary, Ballet, Jazz, Ballet Folklórico, Flamenco, Improvisation, Dance Conditioning, and Concert Choreography.

Whether you already have some dance experience or have never taken a dance course, the best way to be introduced to the dance program is by registering for Beginning Modern or Beginning Ballet, noted Timothy Rubel, TAMIU assistant professor of Dance.

“These courses will give you a solid foundation in technique and serve as prerequisites for more advanced dance courses. Studying dance is a great way to round out your college education while promoting health and wellness,” said Rubel.

No prior dance experience is needed for either Beginning Modern Dance or Beginning Ballet. The University currently offers a minor in Dance.

Modern dance students will study traditional techniques and contemporary applications of the art form. Through the bodily practice of warm-ups, technical exercises, choreographic combinations, and classroom discussions, students gain foundational skills as a modern dancer that prepare them for rigorous intermediate studies at the college level.

Ballet students will learn and practice Classical Ballet techniques that stem from European dance aesthetics from the 16th and 17th Centuries, as well as the contemporary applications of Ballet. The course also incorporates mindfulness and body awareness through breathing exercises and other experiential practices to help support the rigor of Ballet movement combinations.

Additionally, dance students are offered the opportunity to perform in both Fall and Spring concerts, and sometimes participate in professional works by faculty members.
