Democracy in Latin America Discussed at IBC Bank & Commerce Bank Keynote Speaker Series

Democracy in Latin America was at the center of discussion and debate during the Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) IBC Bank and Commerce Bank 2022-2023 Keynote Speaker Series lecture Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. 

The lecture was free and open to the public.  

Dr. Christopher Sabatini, a senior research fellow on Latin America at Chatham House’s U.S. and the Americas Programme, presented his lecture, “Democracy in Latin America Today: Political Change or Upheaval?” 

In addition to the in-person lecture, a livestream of the event was available via Webex. 

The lecture was made possible through the TAMIU A. R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business and the Center for the Study of Western Hemispheric Trade as part of a series sponsored by IBC Bank and Commerce Bank.

A frequent contributor to policy journals, major media outlets and panels on Latin America and foreign policy issues, Dr. Sabatini formerly served as a lecturer in discipline in the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. He serves on the advisory boards at Harvard University, the Advisory Committee for Human Rights Watch’s Americas Division, and the Inter-American Foundation. 

Sabatini is the founder and director of the research non-profit Global Americas, where he edited its news and opinion website. Previously, he served as the senior policy director at the Americas Society and Council of the Americas, as well as the founder and editor-in-chief of Americas Quarterly. 

Sabatini holds a Ph.D. in Government from the University of Virginia.
