Texas A&M International University's (TAMIU) IBC Bank and Commerce Bank 2025–2026 Keynote Speaker Series presentation, “Swimming Against the Current: The Evolution and Challenges of the U.S.–México Border Economy,” will feature remarks by Dr. James Gerber, Senior Fellow at the Center for U.S.–Mexican Studies at the University of California San Diego, and a Professor Emeritus of Economics at San Diego State University.

The lecture is scheduled for Wednesday, March 4 at 6 p.m. in the TAMIU Student Center Ballroom (STC 203). Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Gerber's research focuses on the macro-economic history of México, the U.S.–México border region, and U.S.–México relations.

In addition to his recent book, "Border Economies: Cities Bridging the U.S.–México Divide," he is also the co-author of "Fifty Years of Change on the US–México Border," an economic history of financial crises, "A Great Deal of Ruin: Financial Crises since 1929," and a widely used undergraduate text, "International Economics."

His recent academic journal articles have focused on human development along the U.S.–México border, the role of free trade, and the impact on México during the 1907 U.S. financial crisis.
