CBP, TAMIU Present Special Panel, Observe National Women's History Month

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), together with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Department of Homeland Security, Office of Field Operations Laredo Port of Entry (OFO), and U.S. Border Patrol, Laredo Sector, will observe National Women's History Month with a special ceremony and panel Friday, March 31 from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. in the Student Center Auditorium.

Themed "Celebrating Women Who Tell our Stories," the event will welcome CBP executives and the TAMIU community.

Featured panelists include Dr. Fei Luo, TAMIU associate professor and co-director of its Criminal Justice Program, Manuela Berlanga, assistant patrol agent of Professional Standards, U.S. Border Patrol, and Rommie Iruegas, chief supervisory officer, CBP OFO.

Dr. Peter Haruna, TAMIU professor of Public Administration and TAMIU Inclusion, Diversity and Equity Committee (TIDE)  co-chair, said the CBP's Diversity Inclusion Program Committee and TIDE worked together for several weeks to bring the program to fruition.

"We are delighted to once again work with the CBP leadership to deliver a special event that aligns with the mission of our committee," said Dr. Haruna, "Just before the COVID-19 Pandemic, our two organizations worked together to present a special ceremony celebrating National African American Heritage month. We are now pleased to once more convene as a group and present a special panel that honors the challenges and triumphs of women leaders in both of our organizations."

Event highlights also include a food tasting, a musical presentation by Joanna Villarreal McClinton, CBP OFO officer, and a poem reading by Dominique Underwood, CBP OFO officer.

A proclamation declaring March 31 as National Women's History Month will also be read by Alejandra Peña, TAMIU Master of Public Administration program student.

In addition, CBP will host a career table for students seeking jobs in the Department of Homeland Security.
