TAMIU Fashion Society Hosts First-Ever Fashion Show

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) students will “strut their stuff” in a first-ever Fashion Show featuring student designers, models, make-up artists, photographers, stylists in addition to participation by local boutiques and stores this Friday, April 21, 2023 from 7 – 9 p.m. in Western Hemispheric Trade Center room 111.

VIP seating is sold-out and remaining seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open at 6 with the Fashion Show beginning at 7 p.m.

The fully student-led event hopes to offer a new creative outlet for its student members while raising funds for future events and activities, said student organizer Anasofia Del Prado.

“The TAMIU Fashion Society is a relatively new club at TAMIU which started in November, but we soon agreed that a fashion show would help to promote our exposure in Laredo while providing a forum for student creativity,” Del Prado said, “Our hope is that we’ll be able to generate interest and support that will enable us to explore field trip opportunities such as attending Austin Fashion Week. We also hope to make fashion shows part of our annual club offerings,” she explained.

Del Prado said the April 21 Fashion Show will feature two segments with Casual and Spring Wear and Gala or Evening Wear.

In addition to student designers Natalie Esparza, Ana Ramírez and Sarahi Santos, the TAMIU Fashion Society has worked with local boutiques and stores to preview their Spring lines.  Among participants are Sara Boutique, Prague Boutique, Viva Boutique, Daisy Boutique, and Pichardo’s Menswear.

TAMIU faculty member Dr. Virginia K. Berndt, assistant professor of Sociology, is the Club’s faculty advisor and said she has been impressed by the students’ commitment and energy in coordinating this first event.

“In a short time, they’ve provided an opportunity to showcase the creative talents of our students.  They are proactive and have created a semester of activities. I have been astounded by the student enterprise and leadership on this,” she observed.

Dr. Berndt, herself a fashion fan, will soon see her book on body art and health published, and says creative expression is important.

“Fashion, whether clothing or body expression like piercings or tattoos, is a form of creative expression and a way of expressing identity and ourselves freely, and sometimes bravely. I’m thrilled that our students have created this club space to celebrate that,” she concluded.
