Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán Returns to TAMIU
The musical stylings of the internationally renowned performance group Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán will be heard once again at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) this Saturday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m. at the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.
The performance, “Fiesta y Tradición,” is the capstone event of the two-day 7th Annual International Mariachi Festival at TAMIU, April 20 - 21 at the University. The event attracts high school mariachi groups from across Texas for learning workshops with Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán members.
Tickets for the concert are available for purchase by visiting https://www.eventbrite.com/e/tamiu-mariachi-festival-tickets-537889220137?aff=ebdssbdestsearch.
Proceeds from the event help fund the University’s mariachi program.
Dr. Claudia San Miguel, dean of the University’s College of Arts and Sciences, highlighted the importance of this performance and its ramifications for young, burgeoning musicians looking to pursue their studies at the University.
“We hope our community makes plans to attend and enjoy an evening of traditional Mariachi music, made possible through the talents of performance group Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán,” said Dr. San Miguel.
She continued, “Students attending the music festival and concert take part in a two-day-long celebration of music. While attending the festival, students will experience University life first-hand and hopefully, at some point, return as University students,” said San Miguel.
A longtime partner of the University and past visiting Artists in Residence, Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán was founded in 1965 by brothers Fernando Martínez Barajas and Pepe Martínez Barajas. It has toured extensively through Europe, Latin America, and the United States.
