TSF Roadshow Returns to TAMIU with Performances of 'Romeo and Juliet' and Shakespeare's Greatest Hits
The words of the world’s best-known playwright, William Shakespeare, will again echo at Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Theatre.
A total of two back-to-back evening performances will take place on Monday, Nov. 20 with a performance of the timeless romantic tragedy of “Romeo and Juliet,” followed by a performance of Shakespeare's Greatest Hits on Tuesday, Nov. 21.
Both performances will begin at 6:30 p.m. and are free and open to the public.
The performances feature the traveling cast of the Kilgore College-based Texas Shakespeare Festival’s (TSF) Roadshow.
TAMIU assistant professor of English Dr. Kaitlyn M. Culliton spearheads this second offering by the TSF Roadshow. Last year, TAMIU enjoyed performances of the classic Shakespeare plays “Macbeth” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
“I’m excited to get these performances into Laredo," said Dr. Culliton, "So many of my students have to read these texts in high school, and I think the text on the page is beautiful…but a little bit boring."
She continued, "I think seeing these plays come to life – seeing a professional acting troupe that has worked with Shakespeare throughout their career bring these words to the stage is important.”
Culliton emphasized the power theatre troupes hold in bringing Shakespeare’s words to life through the power of the stage.
“Comedies are so much more fun when you can see them physicalized. Tragedies are so much more tragic, so much sadder, so much more soul-gripping when you can see them being performed on stage,” she noted.
The TAMIU performances have been made possible by TAMIU’s College of Arts and Sciences.
