Rep. Cuellar Announces $5.4 Million to Enhance Hispanic Student Success, Nursing and STEM Education

U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) announced $5,381,454 in federal funding for Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) to support student success, STEM programs, and Nursing education and training at a press event Friday, Dec. 15 at the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Colonnade.

TAMIU has been awarded a five-year grant totaling $2,999,053 from the U.S. Department of Education's Title V Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions Program. The grant is titled "TAMU Student Emotional and Academic Success (SEAS)" and its one-year award is $599,659.

Dr. Ediza García, associate professor of Psychology, and Dr. Elizabeth Terrazas-Carrillo, associate professor of Psychology, are the project's co-directors. Project team members include College of Nursing and Health Sciences Dean Dr. Marivic Torregosa, Dr. Adriana Blasco-Rubio, instructional assistant professor of Psychology, Dr. Geoffrey Hubona, associate professor of Business and Dr. Ken Tobin, professor and executive director for STEM initiatives.

Congressman Cuellar said the transformative grants will support the creation of new programming.

"Congratulations to TAMIU for being competitively selected for over $5 million in federal education grants," said Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28), a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, "These transformative grants will go towards creating new programming for STEM, engineering, and nursing education while also ensuring students are emotionally supported in their academic endeavors."

He continued, "In Congress, I’ll keep fighting for more resources for our universities so South Texas students can be successful and prepared to enter the workforce. Thank you to Dr. Pablo Arenaz, President of TAMIU, for working with me to deliver for our students."

TAMIU President Dr. Pablo Arenaz praised Cong. Cuellar's leadership and commitment.

Cuellar," Dr. Arenaz said, "The enhanced programs, resources, and activities afforded by these major grants help distinguish our University and the powerful possibilities students can access to gain a valuable learning experience at TAMIU. His leadership, commitment, and foresight help create boundless opportunities for success for our students."

TAMIU was also awarded a three-year grant totaling $1,489,619 from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) Nurse Education, Practice, Quality and Retention (NEPQR) Simulation Education Training. The award is titled the "TAMIU-Simulation Program." The one-year award for this grant is $499,419.

Sara Melendez, clinical assistant professor, College of Nursing and Health Sciences, is the project's director. Co-directors are Angela Michelangeli, clinical assistant professor and interim chair, College of Nursing and Health Sciences, and Dr. Torregosa.

In addition, the U.S. Department of Education Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Program (MSEIP) awarded TAMIU a three-year grant totaling $892,782. Titled "Minority Engineering and Science Improvement Program STEM-Squared (MSEIP-STEM2)," the grant is worth $91,962 per year.

Project director for the grant is Dr. Tariq Tashtoush, associate professor of Engineering. Project team members are Dr. Hubona, Dr. Khaled Enab, assistant professor of Engineering, Dr. Saqib Hussain, assistant professor, Department of Mathematics and Physics, and Dr. Amanda Muñoz, assistant professor, Department of Biology and Chemistry.
