TAMIU Observes Earth Day with Campus-Wide Celebration

In celebration of Earth Day, Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) partnered with Schneider Electric to host an Earth Day Fair on campus Tuesday, April 22 featuring a symbolic lights-out observance, solar smoothie tastings, green pledges activity, and a tree adoption initiative.
The Earth Day Fair observance took place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. along the Student Center walkway. The theme for this year’s annual Earth Day celebration was “Protect, Preserve, and Participate” to highlight the importance of environmental awareness and student engagement.
The “Lights Out Observance” encouraged students on campus to turn off unnecessary lights, power down electronic devices, and step outside to the Earth Day Fair to experience the positive impact of reduced energy use.
During the Earth Day Fair, fun yard games were set up at the Student Center walkway and students enjoyed solar-powered smoothies, made using blenders powered by solar panels. These panels, equipped with solar cells, captured sunlight and converted it into electricity stored in solar batteries for use throughout the event.
Additionally, students could make an Earth Day pledge to show their support for Planet Earth at the “Green Pledges” activity station. An olive tree adoption initiative provided over 150 tree seedlings, allowing TAMIU students to pick out a tree and plant it in a location of their choosing. The Earth Day Fair offered diverse opportunities for students to make a personal impact on the planet.
Juan J. Castillo, TAMIU interim president, said the Earth Day Fair inspires and encourages student environmental stewardship.
“Through collaborative events like our Earth Day Fair, we aim to inspire students and the community to take ownership of environmental stewardship and work toward a better tomorrow,” Castillo observed.
TAMIU’s Earth Day celebration encouraged all to discover, connect, and take meaningful steps toward protecting natural resources for future generations. The Fair is part of the Conserve My Planet IGNITE student engagement program, emphasizing renewable energy education, efficient resource use, and environmental care.
Schneider Electric’s Sr. Energy Solutions Specialist Debra Jones shared her insight about the collaborative venture.
"Celebrating Earth Day at TAMIU has become an annual tradition we look forward to," said Jones, "Together, we’re empowering future generations to make meaningful impacts on their communities and the planet."
Registration for TAMIU’s Maymester, Summer, and Fall 2025 courses begins Monday, April 7, 2025, at 8 a.m. online via Uconnect.
