‘Painting with Soil,’ Four-Week Art Summer Course Offered at TAMIU

The ancient and versatile art of painting with earth pigments is the subject of a new four-week Art Summer Course, “Painting with Soil,” being offered at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU).
Using earth pigment -- natural colors derived from soil and minerals -- students will delve into the historical significance and ecological relevance of these materials while learning to responsibly source, process, and transform them into viable paints.
Through fun, hands-on experimentation, the course introduces a range of traditional and contemporary techniques. By course end, students will create unique artworks reflecting a deep connection to the land and its natural resources.
The 10-class session will meet two to three times per week throughout the month of July 2025 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in TAMIU’s Center for the Fine and Performing Arts.
The course is led by Sandra Amoabeng, TAMIU visiting assistant professor of Art. An artist and educator who uses terrestrial materials, such as soil and flowers, to create sculptural paintings and installations, her work comments on connections to the earth and nature, personal histories, and the landscape.
Course meeting dates are Week 1: July 1,2, 3; Week 2: July 8,10; Week 3: July 15, 17, and Week 4: July 22, 23, 24. The course is open to any art enthusiast ages 18+, but spaces are limited. Course fee is $150. The fee does not include materials, but sources for them will be provided.
