ORLANDO, FL – The United States Tennis Association (USTA) has announced that the City of Laredo Tennis Complex at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) is one of 45 winners in the USTA’s annual Outstanding Facility Awards program recognizing excellence in the construction or renovation of tennis facilities throughout the country.

All 45 recipients were honored Tuesday, Aug. 26 at an Awards Reception held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York as part of the 2025 U.S. Open.

Traveling to represent  Laredo to receive the Award were TAMIU director of Recreational Sports Roberto Garza, and director of Tennis Facility Operations Jaime Donjuan, who were joined by Tina Treviño, longtime local tennis advocate and Laredo Tennis Association (LTA) guiding force.

The City of Laredo Tennis Complex at TAMIU is an 18-court project that grew from joint efforts by the City of Laredo, Parks and Recreation Department, TAMIU Athletics Department, LTA, and the USTA. Opened in January this year, the state-of-the-art facility includes six National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) collegiate-level courts and 12 USTA recreational-level courts, constructed using post-tensioned concrete and including sports lighting, fencing, bleachers, and necessary equipment.

The courts meet the latest guidelines provided by the USTA and the collegiate-level courts adhere to all current NCAA, International Tennis Federation (ITF), and USTA rules. The recreational courts feature 36- and 60-foot blended line layouts, providing greater opportunities for all age groups.   The Tennis Complex includes multi-purpose areas, home/visitor locker rooms, concessions, a training room, and a second-story observation terrace, which serves as a viewing area and gathering space.

TAMIU interim president Juan J. Castillo said the Tennis Complex is a popular addition to the campus and closely linked to the educational mission and goals of the A&M System and TAMIU.

“The Tennis Complex supports the educational missions and goals of the A&M System and TAMIU by enhancing recreational sports, the TAMIU College of Education’s Kinesiology program, student life experience, and learning opportunities for current students. Eventually, it will be home to the University’s planned addition of tennis to its Dustdevil Athletics program.  Most importantly, this City and TAMIU partnership provides an additional recreation venue for all Laredo citizens and promotes local participation, active and healthy lifestyles, and more across some 11 acres of campus land,” Castillo explained.

Juan J. Gomez, City of Laredo Parks & Recreation department director, shared his thoughts on the joint award.

“We are honored that the United States Tennis Association has recognized the Laredo Tennis Complex with this national award. This facility represents a strong partnership between the City of Laredo and Texas A&M International University, and together we are proud to provide our community with a first-class venue for recreation and competition. Hosting USTA-sanctioned tournaments here in Laredo not only showcases our commitment to growing the sport locally but also brings visitors to our city and supports our local economy. We look forward to continuing this successful collaboration with TAMIU as we invest in opportunities that benefit our residents and strengthen our community,” Gomez said.

Treviño, who alongside her late husband Dr. Alfredo Treviño worked for years to secure such a facility in Laredo, said the Award heralds a dream made real.

“I am so proud of this facility and excited to see the USTA award the Outstanding Facility Award to our Tennis Complex.  Dr. Treviño and I dreamed of this facility to give any and all players of all ages, socioeconomic status, and physical abilities the opportunity to play the healthiest sport in the United States.   We knew Laredo had the ability to reach higher than ever to produce a facility of this caliber.

“Using this facility will not only address raising the community's quality of life but decrease obesity and diabetes here for years to come.  Our community deserved this facility and Dr. Treviño and I wanted to share our passion for tennis for years to come. It has been our honor to work towards completion of this facility and to have it recognized by the UNITED STATES TENNIS ASSOCIATION.   Congratulations to the City of Laredo and Texas A&M International University!,” the proud TAMIU alumna (’80) said.

USTA representative Theodore Loehrke, managing director, Section Partnerships, USTA lauded the Laredo award recipients.

"Outstanding tennis facilities like the City of Laredo Tennis Complex at TAMIU help us to grow the game at the grassroots level, and we are proud to recognize them for their ongoing impact on the sport of tennis,” said Loehrke, “The great work of the City of Laredo Tennis Complex at TAMIU continues to support our shared mission of growing tennis to inspire healthier people and communities everywhere."

Facilities were judged on the following criteria: overall layout and adaptation to site; excellence of court surface and lights; ease of maintenance; accommodations for players, spectators and press/officials; aesthetics; graphics (including the use of signs and landscaping); amenities such as casual seating for spectators, food services and social areas; and the facilities’ participation in grassroots tennis programs.

Nominated facilities were voted on in the following categories: Educational Institutions such as colleges, universities, public and private grade schools, middle schools, or high schools. Public Courts that are either small tennis centers with 2-11 courts or large tennis centers with 12 or more courts, and Private Facilities that offer both USTA and public programming designed to help grow tennis (small: 2-11 courts; large: 12 or more courts). A new category, Innovation, was added this year to recognize facilities that have been particularly innovative when it comes to delivering tennis.

All 2025 award winners received a wall plaque and an all-weather sign to be mounted at the facility.
