TAMIU Hosts Free USTA Coaching Fundamentals Workshop
The City of Laredo Tennis Complex at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) hosted a Coaching Fundamentals Workshop Nov. 8 and Sunday, Nov. 9.
The 16-hour Workshop was free of charge and offered an in-person, on-court training focused on coaching principles and building skills needed to teach beginner to low intermediate level players of all ages.
Sessions were held from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Tennis Complex.
The Workshop was the first level of requirements to become fully United States Tennis Association (USTA) Coaching Certified. Coaches who completed the Workshop will have completed one of three required face-to-face workshops in the USTA Coaching Certification Pathway.
The state-of-the-art Tennis Complex includes six National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) collegiate-level courts and 12 United States Tennis Association (USTA) recreational-level courts, constructed using post-tensioned concrete and includes sports lighting, fencing, bleachers, and necessary equipment.
Courts meet the latest guidelines provided by the USTA and the collegiate-level courts adhere to all current NCAA, International Tennis Federation (ITF), and USTA rules. The recreational courts feature 36- and 60-foot blended line layouts, providing greater opportunities for all age groups.
The Complex includes multi-purpose areas, home/visitor locker rooms, concessions, a training room, and a second-story observation terrace, which serves as a viewing area and gathering space.
It was named one of 45 winners in the USTA's annual Outstanding Facility Awards program recognizing excellence in the construction or renovation of tennis facilities throughout the country. Recipients were honored at an Awards Reception held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York this summer as part of the 2025 U.S. Open.
