Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) has received word of its successful reaffirmation of accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

In action taken at its December meeting, the Commission reaffirmed TAMIU's accreditation with no additional reports required. The University's bid for reaffirmation takes place every 10 years and includes an exhaustive self-study process that impacts all levels of the University community.

Dr. Christopher Maynard, TAMIU president, said the reaffirmation is critical to the University, its programs and its students.

"This is a massive undertaking that involves all components of the University community.  Achieving reaffirmation signals a gold standard for the accountability, excellence, and quality of all programs and services. The self-study is reviewed by a panel of peers, each keenly dedicated to ensuring our programs and services perform at a level of devotion and quality that merits reaffirmation," Maynard said.

He noted that achieving reaffirmation is shared collectively by the entire University community.

"TAMIU’s administration, faculty and staff provided dedicated and strategic analysis for this self-study and their tireless sacrifice helped to ensure that TAMIU will continue to fulfill its mission and inspire future generations," Maynard said.

Heading the reaffirmation effort for the University were Dr. Claudia San Miguel, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, Dr. Ariadne González, associate provost, Rosalinda García, vice president for Student Engagement, and Cihtlalli Perez, director of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP).

The reaffirmation process, in combination with the University's commitment to strategic planning, helps to identify and develop new ways of improving the University's operation and impact.

"The process is unique to higher education and, when complete, ensures that our University is not only aligned with best practices, but is using a continuous improvement process to remain innovative in our pursuit of student success. To be reaffirmed with no additional reports required is an impressive achievement and signals to prospective students that TAMIU is delivering a world-class, transformative educational experience,” Maynard concluded.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) is the body for the accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in the Southern states. It serves as the common denominator of shared values and practices primarily among institutions in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Latin America and certain other international sites approved by the SACSCOC Board of Trustees that award associate, baccalaureate, master’s, or doctoral degrees. The Commission also accepts applications for membership from domestic institutions in the other 39 states, as well as international institutions of higher education around the world.

To gain or maintain accreditation with the Commission on Colleges, an institution must comply with the standards contained in the Principles of Accreditation: Foundations for Quality Enhancement and with the policies and procedures of the Commission on Colleges. The Commission on Colleges applies the requirements of its Principles to all applicant, candidate, and member institutions, regardless of type of institution (public, private for-profit, private not-for-profit).

TAMIU was initially accredited in 1970.  Prior to December’s reaffirmation announcement, its last accreditation was in 2015.
