TAMIU A. R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business Launches Banking Academy Advisory Council

Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) A.R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business has reached a major milestone in the development of its Banking Academy with the formation of its inaugural Banking Academy Council.
Dr. Luis A. Perez-Batres, Dean of the Sanchez School of Business, addressed the importance of the Council.
“The newly established Council brings together an accomplished group of banking leaders dedicated to advancing financial education, workforce development, and regional prosperity,” Dr. Perez said.
The Council held its first meeting in July, marking a pivotal moment in the Academy’s growth. At the meeting, Ignacio Urrabazo, President and CEO of Commerce Bank, was appointed the Council’s Inaugural Chair. A highly respected industry leader, Urrabazo’s longstanding commitment to community banking and higher education will help guide the Academy’s strategic direction.
Joining him on the Council are:
• Oscar Cisneros, Senior Vice President, Texas Community Bank
• Rosa Cruz, Vice President | Client & Community Relations Director, PNC Bank
• Gilbert Narvaez, President and CEO, Falcon International Bank
• Roberto Diaz, Regional Lending Executive, Rio Bank
• Brent Cox, Vice President | University Alliance Director, Texas Bankers Association (TBA)
“The Banking Academy aspires to be a leading source of talent in banking and finance,” said Perez, “With the support of our Advisory Council and industry partners, we are building a high-impact program that not only empowers our students but also strengthens the financial infrastructure of our region.”
Perez also announced a new student-centered initiative supported by the TBA. Beginning Fall 2025, all students enrolled in the Banking Academy will be eligible for complimentary TBA Student Memberships—an effort aimed at connecting students with industry resources, mentorship, and professional networks.
He expressed appreciation for the collective effort that has fueled the Academy’s early success.
“We are deeply thankful to banking industry leaders, the Sanchez School of Business team—our dedicated faculty, staff, students, and alumni—and to Dr. Claudia San Miguel, TAMIU Provost, for her support and leadership,” Perez said.
“With this Advisory Council in place and student engagement on the rise, the TAMIU Banking Academy is poised to make a lasting impact—locally, regionally, and beyond,” he observed.
