Texas A&M University System Chancellor Glenn Hegar has hit the ground running...straight to Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) for a first-time, sit-down visit Monday with TAMIU students, faculty, and staff.

Hegar officially assumed his duties as Chancellor of the A&M System July 1, and immediately set a priority to begin a whirlwind visit to all 11 campuses, including TAMIU.

His visit to campus Monday, hosted by TAMIU interim president Juan J. Castillo, saw him participate in focused forums.  Hegar said each session was an opportunity to build his awareness of TAMIU, its programs, services, strengths, and plans, and to gather input and outline his priorities as Chancellor.

Speaking with students, he let them know that as a first-generation graduate himself, he shares their priorities of access and that the A&M System is committed to them and their success.

“This System is full of dedicated public servants — from faculty and researchers to campus staff and agency field workers,” Hegar said, “It’s a privilege to lead them, and together we’re going to continue building a future Texas can be proud of.”

In addressing faculty and staff, he shared his reason for accepting the role as Chancellor.

“I’ve spent my entire career serving the people of Texas,” Hegar said, “But what drew me to this role is the opportunity to positively influence the next generation of Texans — to give them the tools, the education, and the values they need to lead. That’s what the Texas A&M System does better than anyone.”

He also updated faculty and staff on the national search for TAMIU’s next president. The members of the Search Committee currently have a pool of 12 candidates, but the Committee soon will narrow the list to three top candidates for the position, he said.

“We hope to have the process completed sometime in November,” Hegar offered.

A closing reception for the Chancellor was attended by Dean Senator Judith Zaffirini, State Representative Richard Peña Raymond, County Commissioner John Galo and Texas Parks and Wildlife Commissioner Ana B. Galo, City Council members Alyssa Cigarroa and Dr. Tyler King, and other members of the business and TAMIU alumni community.

Hegar is a graduate of Texas A&M University. He has served Texans for over 20 years in elected office as a member of the Texas House and Texas Senate and, most recently, as Comptroller. In that role, he managed the state’s budget and economic forecasting as Texas’ economy grew to become the eighth largest in the world.

With 11 universities, eight state agencies, a comprehensive health science center and a combined enrollment of about 170,000 students, the A&M System spans every corner of the state and drives innovation, workforce development, and service across Texas.

Hegar now oversees a System that will soon expand to include Texas A&M University–Victoria, following the passage of Senate Bill 2361 and $25 million in new legislative funding to grow the Victoria campus. The addition of A&M–Victoria underscores the System’s continued commitment to expanding access, supporting regional economies and serving Texas students.
