Students at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) will have an opportunity to share what experiential learning (EL) meant to them during the upcoming LEARN Expo happening Monday, Nov. 17 from 3 – 4:30 p.m. at the Student Center Ballroom.

The event is free and open to the public.

During the LEARN Expo, students will share their experiences when taking part in a EL opportunity such as undergraduate research projects, internship opportunities, and service-learning classes among others. Some 50 student groups are scheduled to share a professionally printed poster focusing on showcasing their EL experience and what it meant to them.

“The goal of the Expo is to celebrate and showcase the work of students, faculty, and staff who are engaging in hands-on learning at TAMIU,” said Cihtlalli G. Pérez, QEP director.

The initiative is part of TAMIU’s expansive 10-year QEP, or Quality Enhancement Plan, which focuses on enhancing student learning as part of an institution-wide effort. The QEP, known as LEARN (Learning Experientially: Active Real-world Navigation), focuses on experiential learning.

“EL means ‘hands-on learning’ and provides students with the opportunity to actively apply their knowledge and skills through reflection activities. EL experiences have long-term benefits since students can transfer their knowledge and skills outside the classroom, including their future careers,” noted Pérez.

In the days leading up to the Expo, @txamiu social media followers will have an opportunity to take part in an owl-themed scavenger hunt celebrating Earnie the Owl, the University’s symbol for the QEP. Students who attend the LEARN Expo may be eligible for their own commemorative, collectible owl.
