TAMIU’s Dr. Marivic Torregosa Awarded 2025 Enrique “Kiki” Camarena Red Ribbon Medal
The Webb County Community Coalition’s Red Ribbon Campaign Committee has announced that Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) College of Nursing and Health Sciences associate professor Dr. Marivic Torregosa is the recipient of the Enrique “Kiki” Camarena Red Ribbon Memorial Award for 2025 in the agency/organization category.
Each year, the Red Ribbon Campaign Committee presents this Award to an individual and agency/organization that works daily to prevent drug use and abuse or misuse among individuals in the community. Award recipients have been identified as having made a significant contribution to drug prevention and positively impacting the lives of community members. The Red Ribbon Awards serve to honor the memory of and pay tribute to former DEA Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena.
For the past 10 years TAMIU, through its Dr. F.M. Canseco School of Nursing, has worked with Serving Children and Adults in Need (SCAN) to provide on-campus, evidence-based substance abuse prevention services to TAMIU undergraduate and graduate students. TAMIU has also partnered with SCAN to submit and implement Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) grants to prevent substance abuse among students and provide them with HIV and viral hepatitis prevention services.
Dr. Torregosa currently volunteers her time to serve as an Advisory Board member on SCAN’s Laredo Drug Prevention Alliance (LDPA) Program, which is funded by SAMHSA to prevent substance use and misuse among youth and adults with a primary focus on underage drinking, underage vaping, and marijuana use.
Award organizers said her advice and support have helped make the LDPA Program a success and facilitated the provision of substance abuse prevention services to students on the TAMIU campus. Torregosa has also made a significant positive impact by expanding on-campus access to substance abuse prevention services for TAMIU students through other community-based prevention programs and her strong, health-focused leadership abilities and skills.
