Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Dean of the Graduate School Dr. Lola Norris was selected as part of the 2026 City of Laredo Women’s Hall of Fame by the Laredo Commission for Women.

Norris was one of 12 women inducted, with two inductees chosen for the Education category, Also chosen in the education category was Ana Laura Guajardo, school counselor at the Vidal M. Treviño School of Communications and Fine Arts.

Norris reflected on this achievement with equal measures of humility and gratitude.

“This moment is deeply humbling and profoundly meaningful. While this honor bears my name, it represents the collective support of many people who made this journey possible. My husband and my children have been my foundation, offering patience, encouragement, and understanding. Their belief in my work gave me strength when the path was difficult or felt uncertain. I also reflect with gratitude on the colleagues, mentors, and administrators who challenged me to grow and trusted me with responsibility, and, above all, on the students whose determination and resilience continually remind me why educational leadership matters,” said Norris.

She emphasized, “As a woman, I recognize that this journey required persistence and advocacy, but it was sustained by community. The recognition affirms that lasting impact is possible when women are supported at home, in the workplace, and in their communities.”

For Norris, her educational journey began early. While in elementary school, she was already speaking four different languages. Studying languages, traveling and learning about other peoples and cultures has always been part of life, she affirmed.

After graduating from high school in Switzerland, she planned to study medicine but ended up earning an undergraduate degree in German, Spanish and English translation from the Zürich Translators’ and Interpreters’ School.

After working as a translator and interpreter, she married and moved to the United States where she started a family, while also working as a freelance translator and teaching foreign language courses. She earned her first graduate degree, an M.A. in Spanish Literature, at TAMIU. Initially, as an older, nontraditional student with family obligations,

“I had doubts about whether graduate school was right for me, but I encountered very supportive professors who recognized my potential, mentored me, and encouraged me to further my education. I realized that I loved doing research, and I already knew that I loved teaching,” said Norris.

She went on to earn a Ph.D. in Hispanic Studies at Texas A&M University and a second master’s degree in Spanish Translation and Interpreting at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

Norris underscores her commitment to education in the daily efforts made to support graduate students toward brighter, bolder futures.

“I am most proud of helping expand access and opportunity, particularly for students who may not have seen higher education as a place where they belonged. Whether working directly with students, mentoring emerging scholars and educators, or building programs, my greatest satisfaction comes from witnessing lives transformed through education. The greatest reward has been seeing students grow into confident professionals and engaged contributors to their communities. Ultimately, the true measure of success is graduates uplifting their families and strengthening their communities,” said Norris.

For the next generation of women leaders, Norris offers the following words of advice.

“Lead with courage and compassion. Recognize that leadership is not a solitary endeavor and build strong networks of support. Trust your voice and your expertise; your perspective is both needed and valued in leadership spaces. Seek mentors and remember the importance of mentoring others in return. Never stop learning. When your leadership uplifts others, you create an impact that endures far beyond your individual achievement,” Norris noted.
