TAMIU Advances AI-Enabled Future Astronaut Trail, Expands Program Internationally

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), through its Office of Global and Community Engagement (GCE), is advancing the Future Astronaut Trail, an innovative, AI-enabled, multilingual English and Spanish learning experience developed through a long-term collaboration with Fun Learning Campus Finland.
This initiative reflects TAMIU’s role as a social catalyst, advancing change and strengthening connections across the region, state, nation and beyond.
It also directly aligns with the GCE mission to inspire and empower communities across the region, state, country, and world to achieve academic success, drive social impact, and build global connections that spark positive change.
Central to this effort, GCE fosters community engagement by creating opportunities for individuals and families to participate in activities that are both individually life-enriching and socially beneficial to the broader community.
The Future Astronaut Trail, developed by Fun Learning Campus Finland in partnership with NASA, is a free, place-based, and globally connected learning experience that allows children and families to engage in interactive, story-driven missions that promote literacy, critical thinking, and curiosity about science and space without needing to leave their community.
At TAMIU, the experience begins at the Sonia and Memo Benavides Immersive Theater, located within the Lamar Bruni Vergara (LBV) Planetarium, where participants are introduced to the journey. Step-by-step instructions to begin the trail are available 24/7 at the front of the LBV Planetarium, ensuring continuous access for families, students, and visitors.
Originally launched at TAMIU as a local innovation in community-based learning, the initiative has expanded internationally. A second version was recently introduced in Rwanda at the Fun Learning Summit.
Dr. James O’Meara, GCE dean, participated in the summit to support the launch and contextualization of the program, helping align the model with local educational priorities while maintaining its global learning framework.
“The Future Astronaut Trail demonstrates how local communities can connect to global learning opportunities through innovative, accessible educational experiences,” O’Meara said, “We are proud to support a model that encourages curiosity, literacy, critical thinking, and meaningful engagement while creating connections across cultures and borders.”
Building on this momentum, the Future Astronaut Trail is now expanding into Mexico through a collaborative partnership with TecMilenio, further strengthening TAMIU’s binational engagement and extending access to innovative, AI-supported learning bilingual experiences for families and learners across the U.S.–Mexico border region.
This expansion highlights TAMIU’s leadership in connecting global innovation to local impact through sustained international collaboration and reinforces its commitment to creating accessible, quality and relevant learning experiences, O'Meara said.
