TAMIU Petroleum Engineering Program Receives $3.8M Software Donation

Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) petroleum engineering program recently received a $3.8 million software donation from Petroleum Experts (Petex), an international company that develops engineering software for the petroleum industry.
The advanced software will enable students to model comprehensive oil and gas production systems, enhancing hands-on learning and supporting innovative teaching, research, and industry-focused training.
Dr. Fatick Nath, TAMIU associate professor of petroleum engineering and lead on securing these educational licenses, explained the importance of this funding.
“PE Limited continues to support TAMIU’s petroleum engineering program by renewing and continuing to provide its Integrated Production Modeling (IPM) educational software licenses. IPM is an industry-standard suite for modeling integrated oil and gas production systems, including reservoirs, wells, and surface networks,” Nath said.
Through these licenses, students will gain the skills needed for employment in the petroleum engineering industry, Nath emphasized.
“This ongoing industry support for hands-on teaching, student training, research, and workforce preparation provides TAMIU petroleum engineering students with access to professional software used in the energy industry. The value of this donation is $3,816,620,” Nath said.
Founded in 1990, the Scotland-based company Petex (PE Limited) has more than 400 clients worldwide and is recognized as the market leader in developing petroleum engineering software for the oil industry. It offers educational licenses to a limited number of universities that offer petroleum engineering programs. The company's Houston office, Petroleum Experts Inc., facilitated the donation. Additional information is available at petex.com.
The petroleum engineering program is one of several career pathways offered through the University’s School of Engineering, which also offers ABET-accredited undergraduate programs in systems engineering and computer engineering.
Additionally, students can take advantage of a Pre-Engineering curriculum that allows students to transfer to engineering programs at other institutions.
University engineering laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art computers and instruments to facilitate both teaching and research. The School of Engineering currently manages several laboratories that support the department’s various disciplines.
Graduates have gained employment at Fortune 500 companies and other business enterprises, as well as at federal, state, and local government agencies. Graduates have worked at companies such as Killam Oil & Gas Co. Ltd., Cudd Energy Services, NOV, Lewis Energy Group, TX DOT Laredo, Lockheed Martin, JPMorgan Chase, Boeing, Goldman Sachs, Northrop Grumman, IBM, Microsoft, UPS, NASA, the U.S. Department of Defense, the Texas Department of Transportation, the City of Laredo, Prolamsa Inc., and Midwest Sterilization Corp.
