Pre-Allied Health Partnership

LEAP-Laredo Early Acceptance Program (LEAP) and Pre-Physician Assistant Mentorship Program (PPAMP)

Through the LEAP and PPAMP programs, students will be guided through courses and other requirements needed to earn a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree at TAMIU. After meeting the necessary requirements and a successful application process, students will then enter one of three master’s degree programs or two doctoral degree programs at the School of Health Professions at UT Health.
The programs include:

LEAP Program:

  • Respiratory Care
  • Medical Laboratory Sciences
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Doctor of Physical Therapy

PPAMP Program:

  • Physician Assistant Studies

A total of 25 students will be selected each year, 5 students per program.

Requirements

  • Student Application
  • 24 SCH, including 12 SCH in specific Science and Math prerequisite courses
  • Minimum overall GPA of 3.2 at TAMIU
  • Copy of TAMIU academic transcript, unofficial transcript from Degreeworks is acceptable
  • Two letters of recommendation from the following; professor, pre-health advisor, or professional in the field.
  • 20 hours of working, volunteering shadowing, or observing in a health care setting.
  • Resume
  • Personal Essay

Pre-Pharmacy Partnership

3+3+1 Pharmacy Program

TAMIU offers a 3+3+1 Program, this partnership is with TX A&M Irma Rangel College of Pharmacy, COP. Students will be guided through courses needed to be eligible for an interview at the COP.

Requirements:

  • Student Application
  • Minimum overall GPA of 3.2 at TAMIU
  • Copy of TAMIU academic transcript, unofficial transcript from Degreeworks is acceptable (if only have a HS transcript submit instead)
  • Two or three letters of recommendation from the following; professor, pre-health advisor, or professional in the field.
  • 20 hours of working, volunteering shadowing, or observing in a health care setting
  • Resume
  • Personal Essay.

Pre-Medical Partnerships

Program Details:

This innovative program gives you the opportunity to pursue a medical degree without taking the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). While there are no shortcuts to a quality education, there is an alternative path to gaining entrance into medical school. The PPC program is designed to help qualified, dedicated young people get a foot in the door of the medical field. This will allow them to eventually contribute to improving health care in parts of Texas that need it most.

Application Requirements:

To be eligible for consideration as a high school student, you must:

  • Have the equivalent of a GPA of 3.50
  • Be predicted to graduate in the top 10% of your class
  • Achieve a minimum of 1200 SAT or 26 ACT score
  • Have a legal residence in a rural or undeserved area, or health professions shortage area as defined by the Health Professions Resource Center at the Texas Department of Health.
  • Be a resident of the state of Texas
  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Commit to attend one of our partner universities

To be eligible as a college student, you must meet all the requirements above, as well as the following:

  • Be enrolled as a college freshman in one of our partner universities
  • Completed high school with a 3.50 GPA or equivalent
  • Maintain a 3.25 GPA during the first year of college.

JAMP-Joint Admission Medical Program

The Joint Admissions Medical Program (JAMP) was created by the Texas Legislature to support and encourage highly qualified, economically disadvantaged Texas resident’s students pursuing a medical education. The goal of JAMP is to help Texas students become tomorrow’s medical professionals by providing:

  • Support through undergraduate scholarships and summer stipends
  • Placement into JAMP Summer Internship experiences
  • Hands-on experience through clinical enrichment opportunities
  • Comprehensive, multi-phase MCAT preparation program
  • Personal and professional development through dedicated mentoring
  • Guaranteed admission to a Texas medical school if all criteria are met

JAMP partners with nine Texas medical schools and sixty-five public and private four-year undergraduate institutions.

Pre-Dental Partnerships

We Make Lives Better - The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio

UTHSCSA's dual degree program with cooperating undergraduate schools allows students to apply credits earned during Dental School to college requirements, saving a year’s work while earning both a bachelor's degree and a dental degree.

The student interested in dentistry applies when he/she has completed between 12 and 30 hours of college work, and is attending a college or university affiliated with the UTHSCA Dental School's Dual Degree/Early Acceptance (3+4) Program.

During the three-year undergraduate portion of the 3+4 Program, students will:

  • Complete a special three-year curriculum designed by the undergraduate institution
  • Attend an orientation at the Dental School
  • Take the Dental Admissions Test (DAT)

Submit a formal application to the Texas Medical and Dental School Application Service before October 15th of the third year

The student is ready to enroll in Dental School when he/she has:

  • Completed predental requirements and the undergraduate institution’s special three-year curriculum
  • Earned a grade of “C” or better in prerequisite courses and maintained a cumulative GPA and Science GPA of 3.4 in undergraduate work
  • Scored at least an 18 on the Academic Average of the DAT
  • Established a record of ethical behavior during college years and received a positive recommendation from the predental advisory committee of the undergraduate school

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Dental Branch (UTDB) and Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) have partnered to form the Dental Early Acceptance Program. The program offers highly qualified students with an interest in dentistry, and who through personal experiences have demonstrated the ability to overcome adverse or disadvantaged circumstances, the opportunity to be considered for and to receive conditional early acceptance to UTDB. The Program will offer guidance and support mechanisms to those selected for participation.

UTDB would like to invite you to submit an application to this Program and to be considered for one of the early admissions offers. Further description of this program and applications are available with Mr. Amede Rubio. If you are interested in applying, please complete the application and submit it with the required documentation to the Health Professions Advising Office no later than October 31st of your sophomore year in college.

Requirements For Final Acceptance Into UTDB-Houston

  1. While at TAMIU you must meet the following criteria:
    1. You must pursue a program of study at TAMIU, as advised by the Health Profession advisor, which leads to a baccalaureate degree.
    2. The program of study must include the following prerequisite courses:
      • English: 1 year of College English
      • Biology: 2 years, as required for science majors; 1 year must include formal laboratory experience
      • Physics: 1 year as required for science majors, including the corresponding laboratory experience
      • Biochemistry: 1 semester (minimum 3 semester hours)
      • General Chemistry: 1 year, as required for science majors, including the corresponding laboratory experience
      • Organic Chemistry: 1 year, as required for science majors, including the corresponding laboratory experience
      • Statistics: 1 semester (minimum 3 semester hours) Math or Science based
    3. You must obtain a minimum grade of “B” or above in the prerequisite courses
    4. Elective courses in the sciences should be selected such as Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology, Embryology, Histology, Cell Biology.
    5. All courses required for admission must be completed by the end of the Spring semester prior to entry at UTDB. Students who are in good standing in the Program may request a waiver of degree completion if the degree is not completed after the fourth year or may request to have their admission deferred until the following academic year.
    6. Attainment of a minimum GPA of 3.3 in course work at TAMIU and minimum science GPA of 3.2.
    7. You must have an acceptable score on the Dental Admissions Test.
    8. An application must be submitted through TMDSAS no later than November 1st of the year preceding expected enrollment in UTDB.
    9. You must have positive recommendations from the Health Professions Advisory Committee at TAMIU.
    10. You must have a positive record of ethical behavior while a pre-dental student at TAMIU.
    11. You must participate in personal record of ethical behavior while a pre-dental student at TAMIU.
