Department of Humanities

The undergraduate English programs bring students into contact with a wide variety of literature written in English, as well as linguistics, composition and rhetoric, film studies, and creative writing courses. Students interested in majoring in English have the option to follow a traditional English BA program or the BA with 7-12 certification for aspiring educators. Students interested in English studies, but who wish to major in something else, have the option of pursuing the English minor, with 18 credit hours in the discipline.

BA in English

The Bachelor of Arts in English degree embraces liberal arts and humanities traditions. The degree program is designed to prepare graduates for creative problem solving, research skills, effective oral and written communication, and engagement with a diversity of ideas and cultures. The English program promotes the mastery of reading, writing, and critical thinking through the study of British, American, and world literatures, the English language, and the English and American cultures, offering a wide array of undergraduate courses in composition, research, creative writing, and various genres and eras of literature that prepare students for professions in the public and private sectors.

Mission Statement:

The English with 7^th – 12^th Certification program promotes the study of British, American, and English based-literature and the English language for prospective educators. In addition, the study of learning styles, differentiated instruction, and best pedagogical practices in the classroom prepares effective, future teachers for a diverse student population in a dynamic world. The study of literature, language, and pedagogy prepares graduates for professions in middle- and high-school classrooms and administrative positions. The English with 7^th – 12^th Certification program offers a wide array of undergraduate courses in pursuit of these goals including composition, research writing, various literatures, learner engagement practices, and student teaching.

Minor in English

The minor in English is an excellent complement to any degree at TAMIU, as the minor, like the major, helps students hone their skills in critical reading and writing, argumentation, research, and time management. Students must take a literature survey course and a Shakespeare course in addition to four elective courses in English.
