The Federal Pell Grant is offered to undergraduate students who are seeking their first degree and demonstrate financial need. A Federal Pell Grant, unlike a loan, does not have to be repaid.

Eligibility for this grant is determined by your FAFSA. The amount of the Pell Grant will be determined by the Department of Education guidelines, your Student Aid Index (SAI), and your enrollment status. Students must also meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards.

Students who qualify for PELL can only receive it for a maximum of 6 years or 12 semesters of full-time enrollment. If a student has received the equivalent of 12 full-time semesters of Pell Grant, they will no longer be eligible for Pell Grant funding. Calculating a student's eligibility will include all years of the student's receipt of Federal Pell Grant funding. You can track how much Pell you have used. (Also known as Pell Grant LEU) on studentaid.gov; the LEU will be found on the Financial Aid Review page.

Pell Grant Recalculation Date
The US Department of Education recommends that institutions designate a Pell Grant Recalculation date every term to determine Federal Pell Grant eligibility for their students.

At the end of the Pell Grant Recalculation Day, hours of enrollment of each student must be used to calculate the Federal Pell Grant to be awarded to the student for the specific term.

Hours added after the Pell Recalculation date will be excluded when determining Federal Pell Grant eligibility. All courses dropped with no record or with a record (W's) before The Pell Grant Recalculation date will not be used to determine Federal Pell Grant eligibility.

Wait-listed courses will not be used to determine Federal Pell Grant eligibility until the student is officially enrolled in the course. The student must be enrolled in the course no later than the Pell Grant Recalculation date.

Pell Grant Recalculation Dates:

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant is offered to Pell-eligible undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's degree and have an exceptional financial need. The amount of SEOG a student receives depends on their financial need, the amount of other aid received, and the availability of funds. The SEOG Grant is offered until funds are exhausted.

The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant program helps students who plan to teach in high-need fields at the secondary or elementary level.

To be Offered the Teach Grant:

• Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) 
• Complete the TEACH Grant Application at TAMIU
• Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
• Be enrolled as an undergraduate with Junior or Senior standing or a Graduate student in a TEACH-Grant eligible program
• Complete TEACH Grant Counseling

Students who accept the TEACH Grant offer must sign the TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve for each offer period with the U.S. Department of Education.

TEACH Grant Requirements

• Serve as a full-time teacher for 4 years, within eight years after graduation.
• Teach a high-need filed subject 
• Serve in a public or private elementary or secondary school.
• Teach in schools that serve low-income students.

If you fail to fulfill the teaching service obligation, your TEACH Grant(s) will be converted into an Unsubsidized Direct Loan. You will have to repay the entire loan with interest accrued from the original award date. Partial credit cannot be earned for serving part of the required four years. Four years of service are required regardless of how many years or the amount of TEACH Grants received.

The Toward Excellence, Access, and Success (TEXAS) Grant  is offered to undergraduate Texas resident students who demonstrate financial need and meet academic eligibility requirements.

To be eligible for a TEXAS Grant award, a student must:

• Be classified by the institution as a Texas resident.
• Complete a FAFSA/TASFA by the priority deadline**
• Have financial need, as determined by the institution (SAI 6472 or less)
• Be enrolled at least 9 credit hours each semester.
• Not have earned a baccalaureate degree.
• Not have been convicted of a felony or crime involving a controlled substance.
• Be registered with Selective Service or be exempt.

Due to FAFSA and TASFA delays, the priority deadline was extended to April 15 for 2024-2025 academic year. 

To receive an initial award, a student must enroll in a baccalaureate program in an eligible institution via one of the following four ways. You can review the initial award eligibility requirements on the College for All Texans site

Renewal Requirements: Maintaining your eligibility
Students who meet renewal eligibility requirements can receive the offer for up to 150 semester credit hours until they receive a bachelor’s degree or for 5 years, whichever comes first. At the end of the first year, students must:

• Submit a FAFSA or TASFA application for the next academic year.
• Have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.
• Complete at least 67% of hours attempted.
• Not have been convicted of a felony or crime involving a controlled substance.
• Be registered with Selective Service or be exempt.
• Enroll at least 9 credit hours per semester.

At the end of the second year and in later years, students must:

• Submit a FAFSA or TASFA application for the next academic year.
• Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
• Complete at least 24 credit hours per academic year.
• Enroll at least 9 credit hours per semester.

Incoming Transfers to TAMIU

If you received a TEXAS Grant or TEOG at another institution and are now attending TAMIU, you must inform the Office of Financial Aid. The Office of Financial Aid will review your request and confirm eligibility with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

The Texas Transfer Grant Program provides need-based grants to enable eligible students to transfer from two-year to four-year institutions of higher education in Texas.

To receive the grant, eligible students must complete a financial aid application, have earned an associate degree, be enrolled at a participating Texas public four-year institution such as TAMIU, and remain enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours per semester.

The Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG) is an institutional grant made available through tuition set-asides. TPEG is awarded to students who demonstrate financial need. This grant is available to both Undergraduate and Graduate students who are Texas Residents or Non-Residents. Students must submit a FAFSA or TASFA application each year. This grant is offered until funds are exhausted.

The Resident Assistance Grant is an institutional grant made available through tuition set-asides. The Resident Grant is awarded to students who demonstrate financial need. This grant is available to Undergraduate students who are Texas Residents. Students must submit a FAFSA or TASFA application each year. This grant is offered until funds are exhausted.

**Graduate students can apply for financial assistance directly with the Graduate Office, students must have a financial aid application on file to qualify.
