The Texas A&M International University’s Small Business Development Center (TAMIU SBDC) is now enrolling for the October 2019 cohort of the Small Business Management Certificate Program (SBMCP).

This program, which begins on Oct. 9,  aims to provide foundational knowledge in the startup and scale up of small businesses, said Michael González, TAMIU SBDC director.

“This program is the recognized leader in Laredo and South Texas in small business education and has graduated an average of 100 small business owners per year for the last 10 years,” he said, “We welcome all aspiring small business owners to participate in this program and learn the fundamentals of starting and operating a small business.”

Program cost is $200 per student and includes 10, in-person courses, two online courses as well as books and materials. The enrollment period runs through Oct. 31.

“We invite future business owners to join us as we begin our 11th year of providing this critical small business information to the public and realize your dreams of owning a small business,” González said.

Completion of this program will enhance participants’ management skills and provide a solid
foundation for success, González explained.

“The TAMIU SBDC-certified business advisors will provide one-on-one professional advising to
assist participants with the start-up or expansion process of their potential or existing business,” González said.

Over the past five years, the TAMIU SBDC has assisted over 3,800 small businesses, which has resulted in the creation of over 1,500 jobs and the retention of over 1,500 more. These efforts also resulted in the infusion of $53.4 million in capital into the community, González said.

Throughout 2019-2020, TAMIU is celebrating its 50th anniversary and its 25th  anniversary at its north Laredo campus.  A dedicated website shares the University’s transformation from a hybrid upper-level university to a full doctoral degree-granting University. The website traces the University’s history, shares its impact in personal stories, and includes a calendar of Anniversary events and more at tamiu.edu/50.
