Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) has recently joined with 26 universities across Texas to form the Texas Library Coalition for United Action (TLCUA).

Through the newly formed TLCUA, university libraries from across the state will work in tandem to improve access to faculty publications and discuss the sustainability of journal subscriptions.

TAMIU joins the TLCUA, along with several A&M System campuses, including Tarleton State University, Texas A&M University, Texas A&M University-Central Texas, Texas A&M University-Commerce, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Texas A&M University-San Antonio,  and Texas A&M University-Texarkana, among others.

Benjamin Rawlins, TAMIU Library Services director, asserts the importance of this Coalition and lauds the University’s commitment to supporting ongoing access to scholarly publications.

“This is an important initiative that harnesses the collective power of libraries across Texas to ensure a sustainable model for access to valuable scholarly research. The Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library is excited and proud to be a member of this Coalition,” said Rawlins.

Among the Coalition’s goals are to improve access to scholarship, increase control of faculty content, and develop sustainable pricing models that take into account limited university budgets.

Through the continued use of emerging technologies, the Coalition seeks to increase the availability of resources to benefit all academic libraries. Additionally, the Coalition has entered into dialog with the academic-based publisher, Elsevier. As the world’s largest publisher of scholarly work, Elsevier publishes 2,500 journals and covers topics in medicine, biology, psychology, business, and more.

Some 1200 colleges across the nation were reviewed.

As part of its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, TAMIU’s campus is closed only to the general public. Entry to campus continues for students, faculty, staff and those having legitimate reasons to be on campus. Online and virtual services at the University continue, practicing all CDC Guidelines on gathering, masking and social distancing and with most staff working remotely.
