TAMIU Earns ‘Voter Friendly Campus’ National Designation by NASPA, Fair Election Center

Voter Friendly Seal

Lauded for its efforts to increase campus-wide voter engagement and participation, Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) was recently designated as a Voter Friendly Campus by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education and Fair Election Center’s Campus Vote Project.

TAMIU joins 234 colleges and universities across the nation in receiving this significant status. The designation is primarily granted to institutions of higher education who help promote student awareness on voter registration and voting. Often, this translates to organizing and engaging potential and currently registered voters through a series of events aimed and encouraging participation in the democratic process.

“This designation is a testament to the hard work of the TAMIU All-In Democracy Task Force members and the student body at large. Our efforts resulted in substantive gains in voter registration, education and turnout, something that we all should take pride in, especially considering that we did this during a Pandemic and in remote learning,” said Dr. Nicholas Hudson, TAMIU director of the Office of Student Orientation, Leadership and Engagement.

Hudson added, “We are excited to join with other institutions across the country to expand our students’ democratic engagement and collective voices in the political process. We look forward to continuing efforts to increase voter registration and participation through the work of the Task Force in the months and years to come.”

This past Fall 2020 semester, the University’s aptly named All in Democracy Task Force organized several virtual and socially distanced voter-centric events, including a National Voter Registration drive-thru, a virtual talk in partnership with C-SPAN, and a voter registration couch party aimed at contacting potential voters through texts and emails. The University also focused on voter education through the creation of a TAMIU Votes voters’ guide and several programming events before and after the election.

The University also served as an early and day-of voting site for registered voters in the community.

Additionally, several social media-based opportunities included a Voting Matters promotional video created by students to encourage peers to vote, as well as increased promotional efforts through University-affiliated social media accounts.
