Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) College of Nursing and Health Sciences’  Dr. F. M. Canseco School of Nursing is expanding degree opportunities in Nursing with its addition of an RN to MSN Nursing Administration program, launching this Fall.

After completing the undergraduate core curriculum and additional undergraduate requirements, students will be automatically admitted to the Graduate School to complete a Master’s in Nursing Administration (MSN) degree.

Canseco School of Nursing dean Dr. Marivic Torregosa said the new degree answers a critical need for nurses with leadership and management skills for nurse executive roles in a broad spectrum of healthcare settings locally, regionally and statewide.

“What is unique in this program is that nurses  with an associate’s degree are going straight on to obtain a Master’s degree in Nursing Administration after completing streamlined coursework. In today’s dynamic healthcare settings, most hospitals and healthcare organizations require a Master’s degree for nurse leaders and managers, and the MSN in Nursing Administration is the  strong preference.  In this Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN)-accredited online nursing program, students will acquire a host of  marketable skills in high-demand.  Program graduates will offer employers skills in leadership and management, financial management, risk management, implementing evidence-based practices to improve care and patient outcomes, managing culturally competent patient care and leading the organization with high ethical standards.  Graduates will be eligible to take the American Organization for Nursing Leadership Certification Exam and will be considered qualified to teach in undergraduate Nursing programs,” Dr. Torregosa observed.

She said the new program is tapping into existing College of Nursing and Health Sciences strengths to provide students with an innovative,  interdisciplinary perspective.

“We’re immensely proud that this program embraces a  solid foundation in the physical and social and behavioral science areas. It’s  also aligned with our other BS and MS programs to work within the multidisciplinary framework needed to address acute and chronic health conditions facing South Texas and our State. Admitted students will develop an interdisciplinary perspective addressing social determinants of health with innovative strategies that can be applied to effect positive changes in health promotion here and beyond,”  she said.

To be admitted, students must have completed the University Core Curriculum, completed all RN/BSN foundational coursework requirements, have a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA and provide evidence of current licensure without restrictions as a Registered Nurse.
