TAMIU Prof Awarded Scholars for the Dream Travel Award

Dr Hanan Saadi

Recently, Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) assistant professional of Humanities Dr. Hanan Saadi was named the recipient of the 2022 Conference on College Composition and Communication’s (CCCC) Scholars for the Dream Travel Award.

Dr. Saadi is one of 20 recipients of this year’s award.

In a recent press release by the CCCC, the organization explained Saadi’s research endeavors on Muslim women in the workplace.

“Hanan Saadi raises public awareness of systemic discrimination against Arab women within the workplace context of U.S. higher education. Saadi interviews 13 Muslim women, who describe their experiences with microaggressions in their academic workplace, and the threats they felt after the Muslim ban was instituted during the Trump presidency. Saadi invites the public ‘to consider the various faces of anti-Muslim prejudices and discriminations that Muslim women face in the United States’ institutions.’”

For Saadi, the opportunity to share her research was the greatest reward.

“For me, this is the first conference I have applied to after the Pandemic where most of them got canceled. I was happy I got accepted because this topic, ‘Do Muslim Female Students/Faculties Belong Here? The Rhetoric of Survivals’ is sensitive, and it helps the minority in various aspects. When I applied for the ‘Scholars for the Dream Travel Award’ I believed in my research more than I believed in the award itself because it draws on the embodied experiences of Muslim females in the U.S. universities,” said Saadi.

Saadi noted that it was important for her to shed light on the rhetoric of a voiceless, under-represented group, while also inviting stakeholders and policymakers to consider anti-Muslim prejudices and discriminations within U.S. institutions.

“When I first received the email to congratulate me that I have been selected as one of CCCC presenter recipients of the 2022 award, I was thrilled and so happy. I really felt proud of myself as this is not only an award for myself, but an award for TAMIU as well. I was so excited that such a topic was acknowledged and will be shared by one of the most prestigious conferences in the field of composition and communication,” said Saadi.

Through the Scholars for the Dream Travel Awards, the CCCC encourages scholarship by historically under-represented groups. This includes highlighting the contributions of Black, Latinx, Asian, American Indian/Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or other Pacific Islander scholars.

Saadi will be announced as a recipient of the CCCC Scholars for the Dream Travel Award on Thursday, March 10, during the virtual 2022 CCCC Annual Convention.

As part of its award process, the selection committee considers various factors, including the originality of research, the significance of pedagogical or theoretical contributions to the field, and the potential for larger, subsequent projects.

The CCCC supports and promotes the teaching and study of composition, rhetoric and communication skills at the collegiate level. It currently boasts over 4,000 members and subscribers.

The CCCC is a constituent organization under the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). With over 25,000 individual and institutional members worldwide, NCTE focuses on improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts across all educational levels.
