The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) has notified Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) of its selection for a $163,661.49 Student Success Acceleration Program Implementation Grant Award.

TAMIU becomes part of a select group of 60 state institutions to receive combined funding of over $12 million to “implement or scale evidenced-based programs that support students’ persistence and completions of credentials of value leading to successful career and labor market outcomes,” according to Dr. Jennielle Strother, THECB assistant commissioner, division for College Readiness and School Success.

TAMIU president Dr. Pablo Arenaz said the THECB grant will help provide pivotal services for University students.

“TAMIU’s specific grant will support enhanced psychiatry telehealth for students, provide 24/7 telephone-based crisis intervention/behavioral health services, and small grants and services to degree-seeking students in need of assistance to meet basic needs, and other essential expenses in order to continue their academic momentum. We are delighted to have been selected for funding in this THECB grant application,” Dr. Arenaz said.

Mayra Hernández, TAMIU director of Student Conduct and Community Engagement, outlined how the grant helps address equity for the targeted TAMIU student population and implements support systems focused on the whole student (self-identity, belonging, physical, intellectual, emotional, social, financial, and environmental) with the mission to develop a confident and prepared professional.

“Our student population and future students face substantial stress through being medically underserved and facing financial hardships. This program will enhance their ability to engage with the University at a higher level with services provided at no cost to the student. Those that need psychiatry, counseling or short-term financial assistance will receive the support they need to help secure their degree completion,” Hernández said.

In addition, TAMIU will partner with the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station to develop an interactive curriculum on “How to Secure Your Next Job” focused on career counseling support, resume building, cover letter writing, and preparing for an interview, she noted.

The program will be available to students with the start of the Spring Semester 2023. Classes begin Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2023.
