Texas A&M International University's chapter of the Laredo Film Society (TAMIU LFS), a student-led organization working in collaboration with parent branch the Laredo Film Society (LFS), is hosting a Film Festival Friday, April 28, 2023, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at TAMIU's Academic Innovation Center (AIC) Room 125

The event is free of charge and open to the public. Seating is limited and interested individuals are encouraged to RSVP by visiting the organization's Instagram page @tamiu.laredofilm and following the link in the bio. TAMIU senior Communication major and LFS intern Juan Ernesto Reyes said the Film Festival represents an opportunity to debut student works.

“TAMIU LFS will showcase short films written, directed, and acted by students who attended the Club's weekly workshop meetings and covered different aspects of the filmmaking process, such as editing, acting, directing, filming, and more. These workshops aimed to equip Club attendees with the skills and knowledge needed to create the short films that will debut at the Film Festival,” Reyes said.

Efren Cantú, a member of TAMIU LFS, will debut his short film "Black Hornet" at the Festival. Cantú collaborated throughout the semester with other Club members to create the short film.

"I'm thrilled to showcase our hard work and passion for filmmaking to the TAMIU community. I can't wait to see the audience's reaction to our film," Cantú said.

Other featured films include “2090,” “Outcast: Take From Me No More,” “Contained” and “There are Rules in this House.”

The TAMIU LFS Chapter was formerly known as Dusty Visions until it was rebranded in 2022 as the first-ever school chapter of the 501(c)(3) non-profit LFS. TAMIU associate professor of Communication and longtime filmmaker Marcela Moran serves as the faculty advisor.

While the Film Festival Friday, April 28 marks the club’s semester’s end, members can access some summer LFS activities, said TAMIU assistant professor and LFS Board member, Dr. Arthur D. Soto-Vasquez.

“While the TAMIU LFS goes on a break during the summer, club members and the public are welcome to sign up for summer workshops LFS will host to cultivate more local film talent. Previous 2022 Summer Workshops included topics such as Drone Basics and Lighting for Animation,” Dr. Soto-Vasquez said.
