Study Abroad programs provide students life-transformative experiences while opening a new world of learning opportunities for them. For years, they have formed a beloved part of Texas A&M International University's (TAMIU) unique student experience.

This summer, TAMIU students are participating in six different Study Abroad programs, of which five are faculty-led . One is the University's popular Reading the Globe program. All told, this summer, TAMIU  students’ travels will take them to Belgium, Chile,  France, Germany, The Netherlands, Singapore and Spain.

Traveling to Singapore earlier this summer were students in the Reading the Globe Program. Led by Dr. Barbara Hong, College of Education faculty member, Dr. Jonathan Martinez, University College lecturer, and Dr. Daniel De la Miyar, University College instructional assistant professor, selected first-year students were provided an international perspective as part of their TAMIU common read.

Another group of students visiting Chile were part of a Travel Photography class led by instructional assistant professor Thomas Brown. In the course, students learned and showcased photography skills by capturing cultures in the cities of Santiago and Valparaiso, Chile. Photography students sought out content including cultural cuisine, landscapes, performances, and street scenes.

Dr. José Carlos Lozano, Communication professor and Department of Psychology and Communication chair, is leading students on a trip to Belgium, France, Germany and The Netherlands as part of his courses, Media and Behavior/Media and Crime and Special Issues in Communication: European History, Culture and Society in Television Series and Films. His students will visit local universities, museums and attractions as well as cinemas and theaters. They will also meet Belgian, Dutch and German scholars and graduate students who will provide guest lectures.

Dr. De La Miyar is also leading a group to France for his Public Relations and Special Issues in Culture course. TAMIU students will travel to Paris to learn public relations techniques, methods, and plan events. The program will share media insight through an international lens. Students will visit local French companies, participate in a service-learning experience by volunteering with a non-profit organization, and visit museums and landmarks.

Dr. Lola Norris, associate professor of Spanish, and Dr. James Norris, associate professor of Political Science, are leading a trip to Spain as part of their courses in Spanish Translation and Political Science. During this program in Sevilla, Spain, TAMIU students will visit some of the country’s most revered destinations to acquire first-hand experience with Spanish-language texts for tourists about various cities. Students will evaluate existing translations, re-translate some of them, and fashion new translations of brochures and other publications. Students will also learn about Spanish business, commerce, culture, health systems, history, and law enforcement.

Another Study Abroad group, led by Dr. Melody Carriere and Dr. Julien Carriere, both instructional associate professors in the TAMIU Department of Humanities, will visit France. The Paris-based program is focused on the French language, the country's cuisine, culture, and traditions. Attractions visited by students will include the Louvre Museum, the Catacombs, and the Cathedrale de Chartres.

TAMIU students studying abroad are required to undergo a Health and Safety workshop prior to travel, hosted through the University’s Office of Environmental Health and Safety. There, they learn about health and safety measures to take while traveling abroad.

Students are also strongly encouraged to download the Travel Alert App. Through this mobile application, students receive additional emergency notifications and up-to-date travel alerts based on their location.
