New TAMIU Video Series Traces Pursuit of Undergrad Degree

A new video series offers a student insight into the journey of earning an undergraduate degree at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) through the singular perspective of a Spring 2025 graduate.
Tanya González de La Miyar, who was selected as the Distinguished Student Scholar for the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, shares her path to graduation in “TAMIU Graduation Chronicles,” a limited video series produced by the Office of Public Relations, Marketing, and Information Services.
González’s story is anchored by childhood memories formed on the campus and involvement in TAMIU community outreach efforts like Discover TAMIU – events that her mother, Gina De la Miyar González, herself a TAMIU graduate (’99, ’01) and former longtime TAMIU associate vice president for Student Success.
“I was lucky to have found this beautiful campus as a baby. My mom worked as a TAMIU administrator...long before I was a student I was roaming around campus, attending summer camps and feeling like this place was my second home,” González explained.
González is tremendously proud of her mom’s contributions to TAMIU and said hopes to carry them forward.
“She helped shape the heart of this University...programs and traditions that students benefit from today. As I proudly graduated from the same University she helped establish, I am reminded that legacy isn’t just something we inherit – it is something we carry forward,” she observed.
In the video, González traces the arc of her student experience, including her evolution as a student, the importance of moving forward from setbacks and utilizing available University resources.
“What matters is how you show up, ask for help, adapt, and continue growing into the person you worked so hard to become and are destined to be,” González said.
González earned a Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA.
While a student at TAMIU, she was an active member of the TAMIU National Student Speech Language Hearing Association and served as Historian. She worked as an operations student employee and summer camp counselor in the TAMIU Recreational Sports Center, participated in community service with The Big Event, and studied abroad in Japan.
She completed one year of clinical practicum experience with TAMIU’s Communication Sciences and Disorders Clinic and received the TAMIU Presidential Scholarship, USF Study Abroad Scholarship, the G and L Martínez Fellows Scholarship, and was recognized on the University’s Dean’s List.
This Fall, she will pursue a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology at UT Health San Antonio. Her long-term goal is to become a Pediatric Medical Speech-Language Pathologist.
Leading the production and editing of the limited series “TAMIU Graduation Chronicles,” were José G. Hernández, III, TAMIU communications specialist, and Marco E. Villarreal, publications and graphic design specialist with the Office of Public Relations, Marketing, and Information Services.
