TAMIU Community Engagement Lecture Series Presents Lecture Featuring Award-Winning Former SA City Manager Sculley
Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) will host a special talk on urban growth, civic leadership and fiscal responsibility by Sheryl Sculley, the former city manager of San Antonio and a nationally recognized leader in public administration Monday, Oct. 6 from 6-7 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.
Titled, "From Challenges to Change: Redefining Growth for Our City - A Talk with Sheryl Sculley," the lecture is part of the TAMIU Community Engagement Lecture Series. Sculley's lecture is generously sponsored by David Killam. The event is free and open to the public.
Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with light refreshments for attendees. The keynote address by Sculley will begin promptly at 6 p.m. and conclude at 6:45 p.m. A brief Q&A session will follow, moderated by Dr. Andy Hillburn, associate professor, TAMIU College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Social Sciences. A mixer will take place after the event in the Rotunda, on the second floor outside the Ballroom. This portion of the evening will be reserved for non-students.
Sculley retired as city manager of the City of San Antonio in April 2019 after 14 years as CEO and a total of 45 years in public service in local government management in Kalamazoo, MI; Phoenix, AZ; and San Antonio. Currently, she is a consultant with Strategic Partnerships, Inc. and a corporate board member at MGIC. Sculley presently serves on the San Antonio Early Matters Task Force, the United Way Campaign Cabinet, and the host committee for The Gurwitz International Piano Competition.
She is a life member of the International City Management Association, a fellow in the National Academy of Public Administration, and has taught graduate courses at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas in Austin. Sculley is widely considered an authority on city management. Her financial acumen is sought after by government and business. She is qualified as a financial expert and articulate in financial matters on a large scale. Sculley is an authority on ethics, having established and maintained high ethical standards throughout her career. She has advocated for and has hired and developed a gender and racially diverse workforce with a reputation of excellence. She is also an effective fundraiser for charities and civic events.
Sculley is married to Mike Sculley and they have two adult children. She is an avid runner, having completed numerous marathons, including two Boston Marathons. She is the author of "Greedy Bastards: One City’s Texas-Size Struggle to Avoid a Financial Crisis," a book on her city management experience in San Antonio that describes what prepared her to take on the numerous and immense challenges there.
