TAMIU CSDO Students Don New Scrubs, Offer Assessment and Intervention Services via Campus-Based Clinic

The Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSDO) students are making a bold statement, both in their care and in their style.
Donning their new black scrubs, these future speech pathologist assistants provide hands-on therapy to clientele from Laredo and beyond.
They’re doing so through the CSDO Clinic at TAMIU, which offers speech, language, voice and fluency assessment and intervention services for children and adults alike, explained Daniella García-Zertuche, TAMIU director of the CSDO clinic and clinical assistant professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders.
“Under the supervision of certified and licensed professionals, students deliver high-quality, bilingual (English and Spanish) services that help clients improve their communication skills and confidence. Through this work, the clinic enhances quality of life and strengthens the community by ensuring everyone has a voice,” noted García-Zertuche.
Unique to the University, the CSDO Clinic allows senior undergraduate students the opportunity to work with clients and provide supervised speech therapy services.
The pre-professional program prepares students to pursue careers as Speech-Language Pathology Assistants (SLPA), explained Nidia García, CSDO program coordinator and clinical assistant professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders.
“Upon graduation, most students have already met State requirements to obtain their license to practice. A career as an SLPA offers diverse opportunities in pediatric outpatient rehabilitation clinics, home health agencies, school districts, and early-intervention programs,” García said.
She continued, “Many of our students also choose to pursue graduate studies in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology, which further expands their career options to work with adults in various settings, including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, private clinics, schools, and community health programs.”
Set to be completed in Spring 2026, a brand-new CSDO Clinic will be housed in one of the campus’s newest buildings, the Clinical Health Sciences Center, which faces the Academic Innovation Center. The state-of-the-art facilities will enhance the way services are delivered to the community.
Currently, the CSDO Clinic offers assessment services, including screenings.
